So my Central AC unit is from 1995, when the house was built. I have a feeling from what I've read online and from what I have heard from others that I may be able to save a decent amount on my electric bill by swapping it to a new unit, some say as high as ~$80 in savings. i have budget billing for my wife, she pays for it, and the bill is ~165-$170 per month, before budget billing it would swing between $220 in summer months to 80 during the coldest months in the year.

My question is have you guys ever financed the replacement of an AC unit thru the AC company? Someone told me they had like 4 or 5 year finance plans. My view on this is that I don't have to pay $4000 up front. What my wife would save on the electric bill she can use to cover the monthly payment on the AC. And now I have a new AC with warranty= worry free for me. Input?

I actually went through this last summer and financed my HVAC (revamp). It ended up costing me $17000 for entire HVAC system and reconfigured duct work. Needless to say my wife and I didn't have that upfront. We financed through the company. We assumed that the financing was a loan at 0% interest for 5 years. It turns out it was a credit card with the limit set to $17000 so we ended up with a maxed out 0% apr credit card. It caused our credit scores to drop 50 points. Moral of the story is to just verify whether it's s loan or a credit card. If it's a card, make sure you don't end up with a maxed out card and see about a higher limit lol.

Damn 17k is almost new metal roof money. Thanks I'll keep that in mind.
Yeah I wasn't happy about none of the estimates but I guess that's home ownership. On a positive note it came with 10year warranty on parts AND labor, a shitload of energy tax credits, rebates, and it's 96% efficient. We save a lot of money on gas and electric

My AC is the swimming pool, how people in Florida survive without one is beyond me, if I could sleep in it I would. :D

Would it have been nice to have? Sure, but there were a few thinks that took priority... this was roughly the order

A) no HOA
B) newer the better (preferably after hurricane Andrew)
C) garage. It was one car but after seeing half dozen 1car garages I had to go with a 2 car.
D) below 310k
E) needed closet space ( having 2walk in closets is fantastic)
F) decent back yard if possible
G) pool

We met all of those except the big backyard and pool.

we got ours down for $12k with 2 new units, all new hvac attic units, ducting back in 2013 or so

We strung along our old 1990s units for a long time. I wish we had done it earlier. Cools down so much faster, doesnt take 2 hours to cool the house, nearly halved our electricity rates in the summer, new units dont sound like a jet engine starting up
