So today I went down to the dealer to ask about updates on delivery and possibly changing colour. They don't have a demo yet, but kindly agreed to an accompanied test drive of the manager's personal Mustang. The GT in manual same as my order.

Now I'm having some second thoughts. In part because I really want the 'unicorn' car that does everything well.

What I loved - the head turning, looking out over the bonnet, the sound under acceleration and overall styling.

The bits that have given me the second thoughts...
1. Sounds a bit quiet at idle and very low revs - don't really want to spend extra on upgrading the exhaust
2. The ride is really quite firm, I know people talk about it soaking up the bumps but I found it quite unsettled
3. The back end got a big wobbly just putting power down on a straight road - not perfect road conditions, but dry.
4. Gearbox felt a little too notch for my liking.
5. The quality of the sat nav really is quite poor - I'm comparing to my BMW iDrive

Not massive things but makes me wonder weather it will need to be driven too carefully on public roads - thereby destroying some of the fun! The finance will end up being cheaper than my current car by about £100pm, but this is roughly what I will pay extra in fuel. Will also have to clear neg equity to the tune of around £3k assuming delivery around Sept which is what the GM feels it will be.

Bottom line...I don't know if it felt as special as I hoped it would.

Any thoughts or opinions that might help me make a decision?
Does anybody else share any of these feelings?

btw deposit is fully refundable.

It's not so quiet when you put your foot down but an aftermarket exhaust would sort out the whole lot.

2. The ride is really quite firm, I know people talk about it soaking up the bumps but I found it quite unsettled
Maybe the roads you were on? Unsettled is not a word I, or have seen anyone else, use to describe it.

3. The back end got a big wobbly just putting power down on a straight road - not perfect road conditions, but dry.
It does have +400bhp you know? :p Again, plenty of cheap aftermarket suspension parts to sort any issues.

4. Gearbox felt a little too notch for my liking.
How many miles had it done? Mines loosened up a little.

5. The quality of the sat nav really is quite poor - I'm comparing to my BMW iDrive
Does it get you from where you are to where you want to be? Job done. The satnav is an option anyway.

Now MTFU and follow it through.

I came from an RS5 so lots of luxury and driver aids.

The Mustang is a totally different beast and is more a soul car than a head car, yes its a much lesser car to the BMW M's and Audi RS's but it is a lot cheaper.... also it is a mustang and that is all you need to remember. These cars have character in heaps and if you can live with the shortfalls you will get a rather unique car which can be upgraded and changed in almost any way over the years.

Im sure if you invest into the sat nav, suspension setup, exhaust, some summer tyres and remove the spring from the clutch you'll love it, and it will still be cheaper than a M4

Thanks all for the voices of reason. This may be true, though I wouldn't have thought so until today. Having said that, I knew that I wouldn't keep the car for more than 12-18m max anyway. But thats the same with all my cars.
Either way, I've watched a few Mustang videos and feel better now.:D
I think a suspension upgrade will be definitely necessary. The rest of my perceived cons will be outweighed by the positives!

Don't buy it.
If it was the right car for you, you would have loved it.

I'll admit to not being a Mustang guy, I am, however, a Ford guy so maybe it's that allowing me to see through the quirks and shortcomings.

Either way, at the risk of repeating myself, what else are you going to find for circa £35K that goes, looks and sounds like one of these? Even for twice the price. It's a no-brainer.

I think thats an oversimplification.
There's no such thing as the perfect car - performance, economy, styling, ride, cost, quality all comes into it.
As mentioned for the money there's probably nothing that can compete on the styling (subjective) or engine.
I've cars that I have loved and disliked. But I got bored even of the one's I loved. My second thoughts were about whether I would rather drive anything else at the moment, considering all of the above in the real world.
Having spent the afternoon looking, I'm not sure there is.
But I far from feel that the Mustang will tick all my boxes. Still I have an itch about having one that needs to be scratched.
I'll wager that I'll keep it less than 12 months though!

Ah! fair enough. If you have the itch, then it must be scratched, or you'll never know. Looking at what you drive now, were you looking at the convertible?

No I reckon this car was a bad move. Had a 335d before which was a far better car. This one is more expensive to run and slower. The convertible was another of my itches. It's great when you can use it but not enough opportunity.

Yeah we will bring the price of fuel back to £1.25 a ltr by filling these tanks twice a week, demand for oil will be back to normal once we all have our stangs
