Did you have a loan on the car? If so you cannot get a check made out to just you in most cases.... usually you and the body shop.

If I was at that high a risk of having my entire car keyed whilst being parked at work, I'd seriously consider parking the vehicle at more secure location nearby.

Diminished value is often negligible amounts on a simple minor resprays of one or a few panels (they SHOULD be able to paint the small defect portion and blend it without stripping and respraying all of the affected panels) but rather to accidents. Absent this being a 60's 250 GTO with original paint or some rare collector car where the value is based on original paint. And it is VERY expensive (expert, attorney, court) to prove sometimes if the insurance company wont budge on what they want to pay out, more than the actual diminished value.

And I also believe, having lived there in the past, that Michigan is still a no fault state. So good luck getting your own policy to pay our DV as this was not an accident. I believe Michigan requires an actual accident for the DV laws to kick in.

"Insurers’ obligation under auto policies to “repair or replace” did not require payment for diminution in value of vehicle as result of accident, where provisions expressly limited coverage to lesser of actual value or cost of repair." Driscoll v. State Farm Mut. Auto. Ins. Co., 227 F. Supp.2d 696 (E.D. Mich. 2002) was the prevailing cited case looking it up.

There is a good chance that it will be as good as or better than factory. Factory Ford paint is already pretty poor to begin with.
