This is an odd question since there are so many great 140-200 treadwear tires great for track days. I'm going to be running in a time attack class that requires 220 or higher treadwear tires 285 max width. I'm looking for some opinions on what 220+ tire has the best grip.

A list of tires worth considering (other options???)

  • Continental ExtremeContact DW
  • Firestone Firehawk Indy 500
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sport
  • Nitto NT555 G2

I'd have to guess MPSS would be the best, but also cost the most!

Bridgestone S-04 Pole Position. I think they are 280 TW. The price is more agreeable than some others

The RS3's wont work, they are 200 TW.

Actually, the factory Pirellis get a bad rap. I have been autocrossing on them this season with respectable results and I would have zero reservations running these as a track day tire.
They are 220TW and you can get them reasonably as takeoffs. My only real concern with these tires is that they are not as communicative as some of the others that I have run.

Didn't realize they went back to 200. A few years ago when I ran them, they had gone to a 220 treadwear rating. Apparently they went back to 200.

I just had these installed Saturday. Too soon to offer any real opinions but they seem to be a solid tire and are a good bit cheaper than the MPSS which does get greasy when hot.

Bonus: Bridgestone just dropped a $70 rebate on most of their tires.

Bridgestone S-04 Pole Position here. Excellent performance so far. Ran two track days in Texas July heat with without loosing grip. Good price also and received my bonus rebate in the mail this week.

I used to like that tire, but unless they have redesigned it, it is like 10 years old..? The new stuff coming out seems to be showing real advances for 20% premium in price. Those Kumhos PS91XL did NOT drive like 260 AA tires*

*their first track day.. They drove like RA-1's ...

Get some heat in the stock Pirelli P-Zeros, I've outhandled some "good" drivers on slicks running both 255/40R19 all around, and the 275/40R19 all around on different days.
