I've never stopped anyone from driving any of my cars. Buddy of mine couldn't believe it when he asked to drive my Cobra and I threw him the keys. It's just a Mustang and anything is replaceable. One of the scariest moments I had in a car is when I was in high school and a friend let me drive his Talon TSI and I blew the intercooler hose off as soon as I got around the corner. I thought I destroyed his car but it was fixed in seconds.

This actually happened back in November of last year. I posted the thread back then so it is floating around here somewhere.
Long story, I'll try to make short.
Son was on his weekend drill with the SC Army Guard. It was his birthday weekend and I had spent all day since 5am over the smoker cooking butts and ribs. He got to the house (around 7 pm) and brought home one of his "battle buddys" to help him on his '04 GT with a Manual Trans. They were going to do a quick job fixing something.
The wife's car was in front of one of the garage doors and he asked me for her key that was in my console of the Mustang.
Being tired and not thinking, (remember, I was up at 5 am) I handed him my fob and told him where the key was. He then let his friend sit in my car, crank it up to hear it. (He never mentioned he was going to do this, or I would have come down to do it for them)
I always leave my car in 1st when parking it, but this time I forgot to set the parking brake.
Young man started the car and didn't check the shifter when he got out to hear the exhaust note. let his foot off the clutch and it jumped into the garage door frame.
Yea, I was already pissed that I had spent all day since 5 am cooking, they were late getting off drills and we were all sitting around waiting on him to eat. Then he comes home and insists on this "quick repair" before eating. We were all like "WTF!? Can't he work on the car after we eat??"
Then he came upstairs with the bad news.....
Lesson learned?
1) Never assume anyone knows how to handle a manual trans even if they drive one
2) Always set the parking brake. This would have prevented this
3) Always leave the car parked in reverse if pulling up to an object parked in front of me.

I'd let maybe 2 of my closest friends drive it and my Dad. Definitely never friends of friends.

Yep, my dad, mom, and brother drove it and I would let one of our family friends drive mine, but that is about it. The family friend has a 14 Stingray Vette and they let me drive it on the day they brought it home, so I have returned the favor.

I'd only let people drive it that I know wouldn't do anything stupid and then only with me in the passenger seat. Maybe I'll ease up once the first couple of dings are a fact.

I've let two people -- actually encouraged two people -- to drive my car: my mechanic, and my buddy Stan - he's the airport manager of Freeway Airport, an aircraft mechanic, pilot, and climbing partner. I have complete faith in his ability to drive, or basically control just about any vehicle. My stepmother is off the list completely -- God bless her, but she is really scary behind the wheel -- I owe her plenty, but not a seat behind the wheel of my car. There are a few other folks I might encourage to drive it - but most of my friends don't drive stick.

I let certain friends drive and beat on my cars that I know can handle it, but only with myself in the car. I will teach anyone how to drive a stick in my cars, but they have to drive it regular. I don't trust them to step into the throttle and handle the car. Ive taught a lot of men and women to drive sticks. Ive never had a single person I taught burn out or burn the clutch in general, no grinds either. :-D Plenty of slow learners though that kill it a bunch and zero accidents.

What a great thread! So far only my wife and I have drove our new stang. I know from past cars most people that I let drive them always were to eager to romp on it and bang gears before they even got a feel for the car. The end result was normally a miss/grind gear or two "which isn't nothing thats going to hurt the car". Once the newness wears off I'm sure I'll be more willing to let some family and friends drive her.
