I have been very pleased with my AT on the Mustang. Smooth, fast and zero problems.

Personally i am an automatic guy through and through and would never even look at a manual.

As a bonus, the AT is quicker too.... ;)

On the german forum some people are reporting that there's a new update for AT Mustangs since a few days. According to reports it comes with a huge improvement in the responsiblity of the automatic and finally gives you the opportunity to switch back to the 5th gear in abover 180km/h
Mine changes down at 180.....but not at 185

No sorry. People still trying to get this information proved by their dealer, so they can get this update too. I will inform you if I hear something new about that
Maybe we can ask here on the Forum to get this information ?

FordService , can you confirm this update to the AT gear box ? If true, what kind of improvement can we expect on it ?
Thanks Deysha

For the Ecoboost there's things like the transmission tuning from Tune+. Isn't there anything like that on the GT platform for you John577 ? Wonder how much it helps!
Don't know if something like this exists for the GT, will investigate this point :D

Since this update could only effect EU Mustangs I don't think the Ford Service can tell us something about it

The ZF 8 speed is the Daddy-O of all automatic transmissions. Best auto in the world.

Personally I think the Ford 6AT is not bad at all. It's a classic automatic, which means it launches properly off the line and you can step on it like you stole it.

Those smooth shifting VW DSG boxes might seem nice while driving, but they jerk like hell off the line. Plus they are VW which means they will break down, the only question is how soon. Same goes for Audi's Multitronic which I also had in my A5. Super smoothy silk while driving (nothing compares) but a nightmare to get away from standstill.

I have high expectations on the new Ford/GM 10-speed AT.

The 6-speeder that Ford uses in the Mustangs is a very well proven and strong gearbox. Been around for years so couldn't agree more :D

The latest versions of Audi's 7-speed multitronic is supposedly very very good. My A6 has the 8-speeder which is superb. Daughters Golf uses the VW DSG which, as you say, is soooo slow of the line its embarassing, but super smooth.

I have to agree, as you said, it's very well proven and strong gearbox. The only point I've to complain about is the smoothness of the box. Everything else is really good on it :)

Strange. Mine's very smooth....perhaps using different software

an update does indeed sound interesting, and while it may be a EU specific thing - I believe nothing happens with these car without Ford US knowing about it... they build'em, they load the software etc.

I'm very happy with my AT... have droven manuals since '89 (apart from a couple of rentals and 2 years in a Toyota) but I'm just tired of fiddling with gears and clutch all the time - I got a car to enjoy the ride and this allows me to focus a lot more on traffic and what's going on around me... (plus my left knee locks up occasionally :))

as has been mentioned the MT comes with the 3:31 ratio gears and the AT with the 3:55 ratio... I also believes they MT version has been "detuned" a bit to pass under the 180g/co2 regulations... (which is why the AT is sooo much more expensive in addition to the gearbox)

You will need to bring your vehicle in to your Ford Dealership and have them check your VIN, John577. This is not something I can provide.

I can't do a direct comparison between AT and MT Mustang, but my preference goes completely towards the MT.
Beside, you need to know that Italy is a manual transmission country: here 99% of cars have manual, auto is mainly choosen from people with motion disability or similar.
I've driven some AT cars in the US: at first it's fun but then I'm getting bored :D

Italian car magazines that reviewed the AT Mustang noticed the so-called "bus shifting gear". I am not able to explain this in good english, but you AT guys probably knows what I'm talking about :)

Interesting, especially so when Italy produce some of the most exotic cars on earth....and they are all autos nowadays :D
