Ford has plenty of business power and good attorneys Im sure. The do what they want. There is a racing company and a chassis company using coyote. How can Ford use the name for engines?
Fair points all. But I would not try to name that knife set or fan Apple, Kodak, Coke, or Smurf. Since there are famous people not affiliated with Ford, but in the automotive space that were using the name first I would think that they would have something to say about it. When I first heard the name, it made me think if the engine was affiliated with the people making the Daytona prototypes. Give that racing lineage, it was not an unreasonable thought. Is it even trademarked? I always thought it was a name given to the project in development, not an official term used to market it such as "ecoboost". In official advertisements it's referred to as the 5.0 Ti-VCT and when it is referred to as the coyote, it's usually in quotation marks.
Either way, does the engine somehow compete with the race team or chassis builders? If I made a kitchen knife called the coyote and someone else made a ceiling fan called the coyote, both named after an animal called a coyote, is there even anything that could be done legally?
http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/1105sr-ford-5-coyote-motor/While under development Ford’s new version of the 302 destined for the ’11 Mustang was referred to as the Coyote. We’re told the name was picked from employees’ suggestions and was intended to pay homage to A.J. Foyt and his Coyote Indy cars. However, now that the engine is in production Ford refers to it as the 5.0L Ti-VCT, but frankly we like Coyote better.
I think the keyboard guys had it first, it is unlikely someone would think that Ferrari made the keyboard as it is in a totally different product area (unless it was red, very expensive and needed a tune every time the humidity changed):doh:I don't think Coyote is a trade mark used by Ford. They only used it as a project name.
It would be funny if Ferrari starts to sue keyboard manufactures for using the word F12 on the key.
And you had time to read it and respond - I would say that is leisure time calling the kettle black! You guys got way too much time on your hands to discuss the Coyote's trademark status.
