So popped into local tyre centre & got talking about my XK8.

Him: Why you selling the Jag then? She's gorgeous! You should keep her.
Me: I'm Buying a new Mustang
Him: Oh, ok. Nuff said. I take it back.

Asked about winter tyres on the Mustang:

Him: You're gonna drive in the winter! You mad? You'll kill yourself!
Me: You let me worry about that

Later:

Me: Just wish they'd put a decent set of tyres on it for the UK in the first place!
Him: Don't worry...... won't go round corners anyway
Me: :frusty:

By the way, he's advice on the winters; get them direct from the US when you buy the spare set of wheels..... crap choice in the UK & nothing in stock anyway.

Anybody else looked into this yet? Winter tyres I mean.

Your in Oxford and you want Winter tyres? LOL!

Seriously good wet summer tyres will be all you need and more. Best wet tyres are:

Uniroyal Rainsport 3
Goodyear F1AS3 / F1AS2
Michelin Pilot Sport 4
Yokohama Advan V105
Michelin Super Sports

The above will serve you fine in very cold wet conditions and light snow dusting. If you get a day of snow, take the day off work, work from home, call a taxi or take another car. :)

My other car is an M3, stripped out, 390BHP, 1300kg and I can drive it like a mad man in 0c wet conditions, because its got a good wet summer tyre (Advan V105), no need for Winter tyres at all unless you up in Scotland and have to deal with weeks of snow.

Unfortunately the Pzero the Mustang comes fitted with is a shockingly bad tyre in cold/wet conditions.

Gibbo, you are a star! That's just the info. I was wanting!

Shouldn't have bothered with the centre, should have just come on here.

BTW, spot on with winter here in the Shire........ we get away with it 99% of the time. I work from home but on call most of the time & have to get over Town any time day or night so can't take the day off unfortunately.
Hence my plans to avoid any sliding into things

No problem, my plan is to run one of the above tyres on the GT PP stock wheels, preferably Rainsport 3's or Goodyear F1's and then get some nice bling bling wheels for Summer with Michelin Super Sports on which are also a great wet tyre as well, certainly vastly superior to the Pzero crud.

However if you really want the ability to drive quick in snow, then go for an all season tyre like Michelin cross climate or a Winter sports tyre like Michelin Alpin.

Quick in snow isn't really my priority; safe in ice & rain (and the occasional dusting) is.

In dry conditions however, I want decent traction to use the car but saying that, but I'm no racer & not doing track days either.

Was thinking on having two sets of stock wheels for both 6 month seasons but rather unsure of what to plump for.

The GT was 'road tested' in last weeks Autocar. Interestingly, their test car came with winter tyres fitted.

Do you not read other threads before posting? No my name isnt Ian Whu but maybe its a Comp Orange thing!

Just joking but anyway we have talked lots about tires (I am so American) and I am eagerly trying to wear my P Zeros out so I can get some MPSS tires (I am so America) on the car.

Ah but in my defence Steve, this post was just about the conversation that I had with the guy and the usual references about Mustangs not doing winter or going round corners. It just 'evolved' into my tyre set up!

Seriously though, I have read all the threads over my time but when it comes to tyres, I know jack. Know a lot about cars but tyres? Nope.
Seems a lot of info about performance & track etc but I just want good advice for an everyday Joe who wants to drive safely all year round with a bit of fun along the way.

Same as,

When I was reading all the stuff about Ford putting the wrong tyres on the car I just thought it was modders like Gibbo being over the top but now I have experience the car and read reports I think the MPSS tyres will be a good upgrade for 'normal' peeps like you and me. (Having said that, I think I am fast becoming a modder!)

I think I started a thread about a 'scary moment' I had which soon turned in to a debate about tyres....I will look for it.

Wheels as well you reckon?
Wheels you might want to import, depending on what you go for.

A UK company wanted circa £700 a corner for mine. I emailed the company in the US and they passed me to what I assume is their european distributor that charged me a far cheaper £550/£600 a corner.

As far as importing anything goes, it will almost certainly be cheaper to get it from the States than it will be over here. The more it costs, the more you'll save. The only issue you have to bear in mind is warranty and getting the correct part.

If it goes tits up how much hassle will it be to get it sorted. See my strut brace thread for evidence.
