Confused about B.L.I.S. system

I was looking at the newly released Owners Manual about the BLIS (Blind Spot Information System).
On Page 159, the Manual states that BLIS does not function in Reverse (R)
However, on the next page (160), the manual diagrams show how the system works while backing out (in Reverse). It even states that BLIS is NOT active if you are in neutral (not in reverse gear).

The Manual does talk about BLIS (working in reverse) with manual transmissions.

Does this mean that BLIS only works in reverse if the vehicle has manual transmission?

I was planning on ordering both an automatic transmission and BLIS.

BLIS may be expensive, but a year ago, I was hit on the rear side panel, while trying to slowly back out from between two panel vans. A passing car hit me even tho' my car's tires were barely rolling. The driver said she was distracted by her kids and didn't see my rear bumper slowly appear from behind the van. You may think that I am exaggerating about how slowly I was backing out...but I am not. I was very frustrated that even by creeping out backward I still got hit.

So will BLIS work in reverse with an automatic transmission?

Cross traffic alert is what will help you in the situation you are talking about it comes as a part of BLIS. It will work in reverse and uses radar to detect objects coming from either direction.

It's two different things that use the same sensor -- Cross Traffic Alert will prevent accidents like the one you had by warning you if cars are coming from the side when you back up. Blind Spot monitoring alerts you about cars coming up alongside you as you're moving forward.
