Hey guys. I'm pretty sure my clutch is going out. under load (acceleration) my rpm climb but my speed does not (as much as it should).
So my question is, can I just buy the clutch and not a new flywheel? How hard is a clutch install? I don't want to pay a shop 1000 dollars to do it. Also, would anybody want to help me out and teach me how to change it so next time this happens I can just get it done? Will compensate with beer, pizza, and some laughs.

nothing "hard" about it. Issue is most people dont have the tools including lifts and tranny jack to do it.

That's a pretty substantial amount of work in regards to the tools you would need. Process itself should be pretty straightforward. Mainly because you need to drop the transmission out of the car. How many miles do you have? Is it under warranty? Any mods?

To have a dealer do it (outside of warranty) you'd probably be considered lucky if you ONLY had to pay $1000. I had an issue with the throwout bearing on my WRX. Long story short, it should've been covered under warranty but wasn't. Typically if you're replacing the TOB, you're also going to replace the clutch (flywheel can just be resurfaced most likely). Well, the Subaru dealers in the area wanted $2000+ for clutch/TOB replacement and would need my car for 2-3 days! It was nuts! I ended up going to a big local Subaru tuner shop (IAG Performance) and they did it for $900 and it took them like 5 hours.

Regardless, if you're going to attempt this yourself, make sure you have all the tools you'll need. I've never dropped the transmission on jack stands so I can't speak for how plausible that is. I'm not sure it's something I would personally do myself but hopefully someone local to you can help.

If the mods in your sig are the only things done to your car, the dealer should cover it. No way a clutch should go out in a year or two for a stock car unless it wasn't right from the beginning. There would have to be some verrrrry bad driving habits.

Well I have a cai and tune also. Driving habits are just like everyone else I would guess. Spirited driving for the most part. I don't ride the clutch or dump it a lot either. It's gonna be nice to get rid of the stock unit and get a new one installed. I wish I had the tools to do it myself. Also don't know what kind of clutch to get. McLeod clutches are good right?

You could go to a DIY auto shop, costs $25 an hour for access to a lift and pretty much all hand,power, and air tools you need. Theres a cool one here in socal www.urdreamgarage.com

RST twin disc and flywheel is the only one I recommend. It's what we put in all the cars that come in, and have never had an issue at all. They are a little more pricey, but there is no doubt once it's done, you won't have to do it again. Also, if you're thinking about doing it yourself, make sure you do the crank relearn after you finish. If not, the car will run like crap. SCT devices and Ford dealers can do it. So can I ;)
