I can't bring myself to pay $70 for a color-matched plastic grill pony. Is there a good way to change the color of the stock one? I was thinking something like Plasti-Dip, but that may not stick well enough.

Plasti dip works just fine.

Mine is on the same original coat for nearly 2 years.

Plastidip is great. Lasts forever. Do 4-5 coats, getting progressively heavier with each coat, and it should last years. Doing too few coats will make it tough to remove, but I noticed 5 is the sweet spot. Any more than that, it gets runny and chunky, and looks shitty.

Should I use the spray or liquid and literally dip it?

I think I answered my own question. A gallon can is $350 at Home Depot.

You only need one can. Take some time to watch a video or two on youtube on how it's done. It's really intimidating at first, but plastidip is hard to screw up once you realize how it works.

I've not plastidipped the pony but have done wheel sets and on my last GT I did the 5.0 emblems and rear GT decklid emblem.

Take your time taping off (assuming you're not removing the pony first) - I used newspaper and painters tape. Practice on a piece of cardboard to get used to how the spray comes out. 6-8" away and short bursts back and forth. Double check the time to wait between coats but I think it's 20 min between coats and 4-5 coats will be perfect. One can will be plenty. If you can some on part of your car, just grab a dry rag and it'll wipe off.

Post pics - GL!!

Home depot was out of the PlastiDip, so I picked up Rustoleum FlexiDip. It looks like the same stuff. If anyone has tried it and hates it, please let me know. I'm going for a glossy black finish, and FlexiDip sells a 'glossifier' product. I'll let you know how it works. I guess I'll just remove the pony instead of trying to mask it.

How does one mask off the pony emblem when plastidipping? Seems like avoiding overspray would be an impossible task.

I don't think you can and do a nice job. AFAIK removing it requires breaking off the plastic studs with the push-on retaining fasteners. Then you'll have to glue it back on by maybe filling it with resin to get a flat surface, and then using double sticky tape. Other ideas are welcomed.
