Cali folks, I'm stuck in a position where I might have to take delivery of a CA specced car. I live in Hawaii and my dealer screwed up my order, and got the wrong car. Closest car is going to be one shipped from San Diego and I know you guys have the loveliest emissions restrictions in pretty much all of our great states.

Now, I plan to eventually strip off the cats for some long tubes, and will be doing a full tune. No emissions in Hawaii to worry about... but I'm wondering if there is anything different with the Cali specced cars, to make it meet your standards.

Parts diagrams across the internet aren't showing any different sets of parts for CARB legality, so I'm thinking the ECU is tuned differently? Does anybody have any insight into this?

Nope, Not that I know about.

Just sensors that say HEY, THIS WONT PASS SMOG! If you're planning on removing the cats and maybe get a different CAI, Then there's no problem.

Looking at your profile I see you're running long tubes and an exhaust with no cats. Are you also tuned? Was there any issues with your ECU not liking something?

You need a tune to run no cats otherwise you will get a check engine light. Plus a tune will help with the power gains getting long tubes

I'm coming from a background with a boosted Honda (I know I know) so I'm aware the benefits of tuning, but I was wondering if there were any issues you folks in Cali experienced that may be unique to CARB certified cars.

Only issue is the cel light. Are emissions laws are hard but with headers the car runs just the same as any other car out of state.

A tune will remove the CEL right? That's my concern is that if I tune the car there will be some California specific restrictions or issues I will run into.

I wasn't tuned at the time, Drove it for like 4 days without a tune, CEL turned on after day 2 or 3.

Lund tuned now, But there was no other problems.

The difference, from what i can remember, is the cats. California cars have different cat converters than other cars.

I just moved from Hawaii and mine was not emissions legal. I had to sign a waiver saying that i was a resident of Hawaii before moving to california or else i couldn't register the car. It passed its smog test.
