Just curious if anyone who ever bought a new Mustang and opted for the black California legacy plates, was the dealer able to do that for the additional fee, or we all need to get a regular plate first then start out own process with the DMV or AAA to get the black plates for a new Mustang?

I tried asking the dealer but they wont respond, cause I do not have the car yet.

Having recently purchased a Ford and Dodge at different dealers the registration process was as follows. Both new car dealers required a signature for "power of attorney" stating they have a "DMV service" company that registers the vehicle in your name. They no longer handle DMV paperwork there but have an outside company do it. Asked about California legacy plates but were told I was to apply for them myself when the standard plates arrived. The Ford dealer could and did transfer my personalized legacy plates to my new Mustang. Couple weeks later new "stickers or tags" came from the DMV. The New Dodge, standard plates were the only option. Couldn't transfer personalized legacy plates my wife wanted on that car. Had to wait for the regular plates to show up and take all that crap to the DMV to transfer.

But basically the salespeople at most dealerships have no clue about vehicle registration. It's the finance manager is the person you need to speak with.

It takes almost 4 months for the DMV to process custom plates. Ordered mine May 11th and am waiting for notification, but figuring it will be around Labor Day.

Ordered my son's plates April 7th and he picked them up last Friday. He just exchanged his regular plates at the DMV.

So if I tend up trading my current car, it might be possible to transfer my existing specialty plates (sequential) to make it quicker to then apply at the DMV for legacy? But it seems some might not allow transferring a specialty plate (Art Plate). I am still trying to find the rules if I can easily just sell a car with existing speciality sequential plates. I only see info on release or retain etc on personalized, but what about just specialty like legacy or Art or kids? take them off car and turn them in? or send a transfer of liability. DMV was odd at one time, I use to have Personalized Kids Plates, then I decided to go to Art with just sequential by applying online and the plates came in the mail. I kinda thought according to DMV I had to return my old personlized kids plates, I went to the DMV and was turned away and said they would not collect the personalized kids plates and told me to just keep them?? that was odd, I was never charged again for them when renewal came around.

I bought a used car that had personalized legacy black plates, the owner wanted to retain them, and they had AAA membership, so we did the xfer at AAA and I was able to apply for sequential legacy at same time as xfer. AAA gave me the red window sticker as a temp, and amazingly the sequential legacy plates came directly to my home address in just 3 weeks after bill of sale and title transfer. I think they do mail legacy plates directly to you if they are sequential?
