The layoff is dropping the 3rd shift at Michigan Assembly where the Focus/Cmax is built. It doesn't help that economical cars (more accurately the perception of economical) have purchase prices that are not far off from good cars. The value in cheap transportation vs say 435HP of fun spread out over time is dinner and drinks once a week. Plus 435HP returns 26MPG Highway. So what if you get 30MPG from a boring car, your commute sucks.
My $100 Escort used to get 40+...that was cheap transportation. That had value.
A $20K Focus that gets 30-35MPG vs a $26K Mustang that gets 25-30MPG...Americans are passionate about cars. At $3 gallon buy your coffee from Mobil instead of Starbucks and you net out the same LOL.
If you drive a car that gets 5MPG less and has a 10 gallon tank it's a difference of like $6 per fill up. I can find that much change in my ash tray.
I agree with your assessment. I just switched from a 2012 Focus to my Mustang. I computed my costs of ownership carefully before making the switch. For reference I used $4 fuel because I knew it would go there again. So how bad was it per month?
Insurance: +8
Fuel: +18
However, I will point out that my insurance on the Focus used to be up where I was quoted on the Mustang. The actual always seems to be less.
Why did I make this change? The Focus was a good car. It was a good car like my washing machine is a good appliance. It did everything well but it lacked character and excitement.
And now I have a turbo... ;)
