I'm picking up a 2016 v6 tomorrow ($21k, not great but best price around me and super clean) and I'm trying to figure if I should get an aftermarket solution or the sync upgrade...it has 4 inch radio.

By far the best option m, for finish, and amazing system beats Ford sync hands down.

Upgraded my 2017 Mustang GT's stereo with iDatalinkMaestro Mus2, RR2, and Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX, receiving exceptional support from iDatalink staff throughout the DIY install process. Despite Crutchfield's USB warning (common to all s550 radio upgrades), a <$50 solution retained front USB charging.

For those wanting to retain front USB charging using this upgrade:

1. Locate the black mini factory USB plug (not used in standard installs and usually tucked away behind the stereo). iDatalink provides a grey connector for the center console USB hub – Note: the other end of your black USB factory plug connects to your front USB bezel located just under the start button. See pic where grey is only used in install video. Black usb is next to grey.

2. Connect the black factory USB to a power source, such as the fuse panel. Refer to provided pics for products used to create this connection. It’s not hard and doesn’t take much time.

The center console USB Hub works flawlessly, including steering wheel buttons and climate controls. The DIY install offered benefits like precise RR2 placement, zip-tying in the original sync module location vs jamming the module behind the receiver. I also used sound dampening butyl tape to eliminate any potential rattle and harness protection loom tape to protect wires. Finally, I recommend watching YouTube for trim removal tips, especially for the shifter trim (don’t just pry up using trim removal tool!). Ford expert video saved me from damaging this piece by pushing up from underneath the center console.

This is an easy weekend upgrade that offers an outstanding product with top-notch radio features not found in Ford’s Sync 3 system – a must for 4.2 screen Mustangs. No other product compares.
