I was returning from Leicester to Doncaster yesterday (work) - and because the M1 was partially closed I diverted up the A46

Clear, empty road, dual carriageway - one (1) speed camera - all the way to Newark

this is what you might call a "Mustang road"

- pretty good surface (ok there is a mile of crap surface)

So - for anyone heading up or down the M1 in the sunny North of England - divert onto this road for a good cruise!

i posted exactly the same a few months ago I think my offices are in loughborough so I go a1 > a46 often its godlike (there's no actual speed camera's between loughborough and newark)

its amazing condition road, nice and level no major bumps/dips and very light traffic its a joy to drive.

in opposition the M1 is now a fucking nightmare and should be avoided at all costs due to the insane money grabbing efforts of the cunts that manage it

I agree with the comment on the M1 and other 'Smart' motorways. They seem to be designed with little genuine interest in safety and Police forces saying there will be no tolerance shown (not even 1 mph) for speed infringement. Insufficient breakdown protection / refuges with main reliance on a gantry red cross system. Cameras / speed cameras - infra reds everywhere, 4 lanes etc. costing Billions. What we need now is HS2!

M1 between sheffield and chesterfield the gantries change to 40mph limit automatically at 4:30 pm every day regardless of whether there's traffic or not
if thats not for revenue generation off the rush hour traffic I don't know what is.

Also "beware queue ahead" creates the queue that never existed in the first place. Up motorway speed limits to 300 (since they'll never go for unlimited) set a min speed and force haulage into the inner 2 lanes and lets get traffic moving again.

On my weekly trips to rotherham last year i saw this shit far too much, infuriated me, i'd even leave at 3:30 to try and avoid it.

My wife commited an offence on a smart motorway - went from a 70 to a 50 and was slowing down at 56 but hey. Anyway, she went to one of the awareness courses and the stuff she was told is unbelievable - Basically anyone that speeds on these roads is NOT automatically fined and nicked, sometimes its determined by your car !! At the time of this offence we were in a Volvo XC60 so just an average type of car. Its really sad now that having the Mustang that on motorway trips I am now in fear of the dreaded cameras and just stick the car on cruise at 72mph and leave it. Mind you there are some roads local to me without cameras which do see a speed a little more than 72.

The smart Cameras are meant to slow the traffic if there is a crash or congestion further down the line or we were told for Air Pollution in built up areas, so on the M25 lets say im at Dartford crossing J1 and theres been an accident at J8, then they will slow the traffic right down to see if they can get the crash cleared before the road traffic builds up too much - its all crazy and more of a pain than a help.
