65 Mustang fastback engine swap

New to the forum and need advice from some old pro's.
My 65 fastback 289 is shot and I would like to install a later model 302 from a mustang gt or cobra. My car is originally a K code four speed and I will keep the original block in storage. What is the easiest way to do the 302, 5 speed swap? Do I want a fuel injected engine like a 96 model or do I want to go with an earlier carbureted engine. Is there a kit available?
Any help would be appreciated

Steve, it would be a direct bolt in for a pushrod motor. The transmission, I'm not certain about fitment but this has been done many many times.

This forum will not be the best place for information on that. I would go try stangnet or the corral. Here, you'll get one or two good advices followed by a hundred opinions and why you're wrong.

You'll want a 86-95 motor. 96 will be 4.6 ohc motor. Doable but not as easy. 86 Pistons are not desireable for cam or head swaps but will work if you are staying stock. 85 is the carbureted year and has the Pistons that allow can/head swaps. I would look for 87-95 and go fuel injection but that choice is up to you. FI I always thought looked cooler when you open the hood and is easier to make reliable. Fwiw, I have a Shelby replica and am using fuel injected 91 setup.

If you choose FI and go aftermarket cam heads, injectors etc, invest in a Moates quarter horse. Moates.net. That and tunerpro program and you can tune everything yourself very easily. There is a learning curve but it's VERY functional. I know Moates personally. Good guy and outstanding product.

Sounds like a cool little project you got going on. I LOVE restomod project cars.

A good friend did a restomod conversion on his 66 some years ago...swapped out the original 289 for a 5.0 out of a wrecked 88 Mustang LX. Think his only real concerns were some fitment issues with the tranny but overall it really looked clean!

I used a summit racing efi harness in both Cobras I've built. Worked flawlessly both times. You can pull it out of the mustang but I was lazy. It also has provision for electric fan should you configure the ecu to control it. I did not do that but I should have. All you need is either an A9L or A9P ecu (if you use the quarter horse, you can configure either to A9L function simply by loading that strategy when you tune it).
