Most Powerful FPV GT Ever to Wear Iconic 351 Badge

fpv.com.au

MELBOURNE, Australia, 07 May., 2014 – Ford Australia has confirmed that the celebration FPV GT F sedan, to be launched in June this year, will be powered by a 351 kilowatt supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine.

  • FPV GT F 351 celebrates racing heritage and history

Developed to pay homage to the 351-cubic-inch-5.8-litre V8 Falcon GTs of the early 1970s, which made the model so iconic on the race tracks and streets of Australia, the limited-edition FPV GT F sedan will also be the most powerful Falcon GT ever produced by Ford’s Broadmeadows plant.

To produce this landmark sedan, FPV’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine has had its engine and transmission electronic control systems recalibrated, to produce a benchmark-setting 351kW of power at 6,000 rpm.

That’s up 16 kW from the most powerful previous model FPVs, including the most recent limited-edition GT RSPEC in 2012.

“I am delighted to confirm that we are going to deliver what our fans have being asking for – a vehicle that pays homage to the iconic Falcon 351 GT,” Ford Australia President and CEO, Bob Graziano, said.

“Ford’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 is an absolute state-of-the-art V8 performance engine, and in the up-coming GT F sedan will deliver more power and torque than even its larger capacity forebear. And we’ve been able to do all of this by simply unlocking the latent performance that’s already there.”

The 351 GT name is synonymous with Australia’s racing heritage formed at racing circuits throughout the country, including the celebrated 1000km enduro at Bathurst.

The GT F sedan will also sport iconic GT F 351 badging with inset orange colouring on the ‘GT’ script of the badge, harking back to Ford’s heroic race-bred GTs.

To achieve the engine’s landmark output, Ford’s engineering team developed an updated version of its Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software which, combined with a unique calibration strategy and torque management techniques, has provided a number of improvements in engine and vehicle performance while ensuring the vehicle meets Ford’s durability requirements.

Specifically, the new software has delivered improved functionality of the boost control system, enabling finer tuning of the supercharger for further optimisation of the power and torque output of the engine.

This electronic management has also ensured that while power is improved, no extra load has been placed on the driveline or the engine components themselves, ensuring continued durability.

As a result of this fine tuning, maximum torque remains at 570 Nm of torque from 2,500 – 5,500 rpm. However, peak torque is produced for as long as possible throughout the full engine rev range, making the new GT F sedan even more responsive on the road or for track days.

The chief program engineer for Falcon and FPV, Peter de Leur, said the electronic refinements had resulted not only in improved performance times but importantly, an increased vehicle performance feel reflecting the strong results observed from the initial dyno work done on the engine.

“Ultimately too, apart from outright performance, our FPV customers expect their vehicles to have high levels of refinement and all-round driveability,” he said.

“For all of those reasons we believe that the GT F 351 will be one of the most collectable FPVs ever.”

The GT F 351 will boast the superior handling capabilities of the acclaimed GT RSPEC, featuring the same significantly recalibrated suspension package, to deliver racetrack-inspired handling, and better traction.

Wide 9-inch rear wheels with 275/35 R19 Dunlop Sports Maxx tyres will also enhance cornering grip and acceleration from standstill, while an automatically enabled launch control feature will tailor torque delivery to ensure launch performance is optimised and drive quality uncompromised on typical road surfaces.

The FPV GT option of Brembo 6-piston front and 4 piston rear brakes will be standard on the GT F 351.

Visually, the design cues of the GT F 351 can be traced back to Ford GTs of the past, with the team developing a ‘stealth’ stripe design package that is evocative of the blacked-out highlights from Ford muscle cars of the 1970s, complimented by distinctive GT F badging.

The GT F 351 will be available in five colour variants from the Ford palette, Winter White, Kinetic (blue), Silhouette (black), Octane (orange) and Smoke (dark grey).

The GT F 351 will feature standard matte black stripes across all colours, plus a performance white option on Kinetic only and metallic gold available on Silhouette. Silver stripe options will be available on Smoke and Silhouette.

“The GT F is a celebration of the GT and of Ford’s history in Australia and our dedicated team have made sure this vehicle can stand proudly beside any GT products of the past – and any Ford performance vehicles in future,” Ford Australia President and CEO, Bob Graziano, said.

“Importantly, too these passionate staff will continue to design Ford vehicles into the future as part of Ford’s 1100 strong design and engineering base in Australia.”

For FPV ute buyers, a limited-edition new look Pursuit Ute will be powered by the impressive all-aluminium supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine, which produces 315 kW of power at 5,750 rpm and 545 Nm of torque @ 2,000 – 5,500 rpm.

Featuring the design cues of the GT F including the unique stripe package, the Pursuit Ute will be limited to just 120 units.

The Pursuit Ute will feature a GT front bar, F6 side-skirts and GT wheels and will be available in the same colour palette and stripe package options as the GT F.

I'd be into that in a heartbeat.

It just doesn't make sense...The Falcon I think would do very well in the American Market. Heck I would buy one. It would be a nice alternative to the Charger/300/CTS-V/SS Junk lmao

FPV GTF 351: The Last Falcon GT Arrives

Mike Stevens | Jun 10, 2014

FPV GTF REVEALED

Barring any last-minute trickery, this right here is the last new model you’ll ever see from Ford Performance Vehicles.

Dubbed GT F 351 (FPV has even confirmed the F stands for ‘Final’), the new hero comes as a powered-up and limited-edition celebration of a rich performance history.

Just 550 of the $77,990 sedans will be built, alongside a less powerful but even more exclusive Pursuit Ute that will be limited to 120 units.

Power in the GT F is provided by an enhanced 351kW version of Ford’s supercharged 5.0 litre V8, an output specifically set in homage to the Bathurst-winning 351ci (5.8 litre) Falcon GTs of decades past.

And while that particular homage - based on output instead of capacity - has drawn the ire of some fans, it has clearly done little to curb interest among collectors.

FPV has confirmed that all but 10 of the 500 sedans bound for Australian homes (50 will go to NZ) have been sold, and build numbers 1, 500 and 14 (randomly selected) will be auctioned for charity.

The GT F’s power boost represents a 16kW jump over the performance brand’s previous top models, including the special-edition 2012 GT RSPEC.

That increase is thanks to a specialised tune of the sedan’s Powertrain Control Module system, centred around improvements to boost control.

Peak torque remains unchanged at 570Nm, but thanks to the same tweaks that produces the car’s increased power, Ford says the engine is now more responsive than ever.

The GT F’s supercharged V8 also benefits from a ‘transient’ overboost function that will deliver a further 15 percent increase in power - “if the prevailing conditions are favourable”.

Pushing output beyond 400kW, FPV’s engineers reckon overboost can be accessed “all day long” on a cool day, but high ambient temperatures will see the function limited to 15-20 second bursts to protect the engine.

FPV Chief Program Engineer, Peter de Leur, says the GT F’s power curve is designed to deliver “a very noticeable feel” to the car’s performance.

“This is delivered in every gear above 4000 rpm, other than first gear,” de Leur said over the overboost function.

Other highlights include the launch control system and enhanced suspension package of the GT RSPEC model revealed in 2012, along with a new G-Force meter in the GT F’s large dash display.

The rear suspension also allows for camber bolt adjustment so that a more track-focused setup can be tuned in without affecting day-to-day driveability.

“When we started this program we had an opportunity to look at a performance increase for the engine so we developed a strategy around the calibration that allowed for a performance upgrade without impacting the all-round driveability of the car,” de Leur said.

Also borrowed from the RSPEC model will be nine-inch wide rear wheels wrapped in 275/35 R19 Dunlop Sports Maxx rubber and finished in a dark grey.

Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes are also standard equipment for the GT F model.

Other changes add a ‘stealth’ sticker pack that includes a large bonnet strip and ‘GT F’ lettering in the door graphics.

The sticker pack will come in matte black on all body colours (white, blue, black, orange and smoke grey), with a white stripe option for blue and gold body colours.

Gloss black accents have also been applied to the ‘racoon eyes’ headlight garnish, along with the grille, door handles, mirrors and rear diffuser.

The powered-up engine also benefits from ‘GT F 351’ stamping in place of the usual ‘BOSS 335’ detail.

In the cabin, there’s darker tones featured across the various highlights, along with a build-number plate and ‘GT orange’ details throughout.

The FPV GT F is priced at $77,990, up from $70,790 for the ‘regular’ GT sedan.

FPV Pursuit Ute

FPV is also offering a new Pursuit Ute, based again on the specifications of the GS model.

Additional features include Pursuit badging, a build number badge, eight-inch GT wheels, GT front bumper, partial leather seats, climate control, ‘Premium Sound’ and satellite navigation.

The Pursuit Ute is powered by Ford’s supercharged 5.0 litre V8, producing 315kW and 545Nm of torque.

Limited to 120 cars, the FPV Pursuit Ute is priced at $52,990.http://www.themotorreport.com.au/59098/fpv-gtf-351-the-last-falcon-gt-arrives

Falcon doesn't fit in with One Ford. It should. Or I should say there should be a large global RWD.

Ford has become FAWD.

There's no competitor to the junk you mention from the Ford stable - not globally, anyway. When Falcon goes there'll be nothing. Period.

On a side note, at the reveal today FPV said this GT-F actually puts out 420kW (or 404kW, or 413kW, depending one which journo you speak to) with transient overboost. Or about 550hp at the fly.

Bear in mind this is not the intercooled version of Miami (Coyote + Blower). That version was said to produce about 430kW. Not sure if that was with or without transient overboost. It won't make into production, too much to spend to strengthen Falcon's chassis to cope with it. If 10kW is the difference I'd say the 430kW is without transient overboost.
