  1. Official: 2018 Ford Mustang Refresh Detailed! (Options/Features, Specs, Photos, Info)

I looked at the cars up close at Carlisle. I really still didn't like the way it looked in orange. The red one was considerably more appealing to me. I expect that I would quite like it in Lightning Blue, or if it ever came in Dark Highland Green... One thing I did notice was the alignment of...
  2. Other gear ratios in 3.15 housing - Torsen or LSD

Well, the .3" is about 7mm. It isn't a huge number, but not so fine that it would require calipers to pick it up. If you put the parts side by side, it would be visible, though maybe not so prominent as to jump out at you. Either way, no big deal. But since you asked, it is the reason that...
  3. 2018 Shelby GT500 Renders

Guess not. You may be correct, who knows. I'm simply pointing out that, institutionally, the term "SVT" (with regards to the group that hides out in the Roush building in Allen Park) is still in common use. It isn't incriminating in and of itself.
  4. 2018 Shelby GT500 Renders

    Um, what?
  5. 2018 Shelby GT500 Renders

Hey, for what its worth, even though SVT is no longer the group name, that name is still commonly used within Ford in my experience. Old habits, etc. So I'd excuse such a misnomer generally speaking...
  6. Other gear ratios in 3.15 housing - Torsen or LSD

The differentials for the 3.15:1 gears are not identical to the others. As I stated above, there is a .3" difference in the location of the ring gear flange. If you set the two diffs next to each other before the install, you'd see it. That might not sound like much of a difference, but if...
  7. How much power do you have on your MT82 ?

FWIW, HP numbers are relatively meaningless as a transmission input. Torque is what is important, since torque is what will break transmission components...
  8. Why not SVT Cobra? I miss it.

To each is own, but the Contour SVT was an impressive car in the context of the era. It was, unfortunately, outclassed pretty quickly as mid-size cars started heating up at that point in time (and the WRX showed up in the US for the first time right after). But say what you want about...
  9. Diff fluid makes car feel slower

I've been in the diff business for 20 years and haven't come across that one - where that change in lube created perceivable difference in drag. The difference in viscosity between 75W90 and 140 is marginal enough to be lost in the shuffle amid everything else that's going on in the car. Are...
  10. Official: 2018 Ford Mustang Refresh Detailed! (Options/Features, Specs, Photos, Info)

I don't think we have to worry about the V8 going away anytime soon. Its also worth pointing out that the S650 timing was pulled up from '23 to '21 MY because someone decreed it on high. There's still a good chance it'll slip back some - that's all still a ways out, and a lot can change yet.
  11. S550 Slop, Clickity Clackity Clunkity!

That's funny stuff, right there! The Torsen units actually have pretty tight backlash for the type of differential - being helical gear, without preload springs to mask the differential gearing lash. When you check lash like shown in the video, you're checking system lash. That is, you're...
  12. What's the trick to removing stubborn axle?

Fred, is your car a PP car with the Torsen diff? If so, there's a 12mm hole in the center of the diff's axle stopper so that you can reach through from one side with a punch and knock the other shaft out.
  13. US Gears now offers a 4.09 ratio!

Just pointing out - all S550 models have the Super 8.8, not just the manual transmission cars. The linked article says as much. The difference between the A/T & M/T is carrier construction (aluminum vs iron), not basic axle design. The new gear ratios fit any of them directly, except...
  14. Official: 2018 Ford Mustang Refresh Detailed! (Options/Features, Specs, Photos, Info)

Well, it was still loosely the same platform as the '65, now with bloated bodywork. The styling jumped the track, but chassis-wise, it still the same fundamental car. Ford used those basic Falcon underpinnings for a number of models, including the Maverick & Granada. It wasn't until the...
  15. Can I hurt this drivetrain?

To be fair, the rear end that GM used in that car was a 7.6", nearly dead-nuts same size differential that Ford used in I4 & V6 Mustangs in that same time frame. It was undersized for the LT1 in stock form, and they never upsized it until the 5th gen car came along.
  16. Other gear ratios in 3.15 housing - Torsen or LSD

I'd second that. $200 is not nothing, but installing and setting up R&P gears properly is not nothing either. It takes a bit of skill, and if done wrong will result in gears that are noisy. Swapping the factory-assembled axle carrier is far, far easier.
  17. Ford Nationals 2017

I'm planning to be there, but as I'm not a 6G owner, I'm not signing up as part of this club. But I'll have my '99 SVT Cobra there, and if my '99 GT hasn't sold yet, I may consider putting it in the car corral.
  18. Other gear ratios in 3.15 housing - Torsen or LSD

Well, understand that the axle housing (sometimes called the carrier) and the differential housing (often called a carrier) are two separate things that just happen to work for the same employer. This tends to confuse people, and could lead to an entire side discussion about axle terminology...
  19. What rear diff technology does my 16 GT have?

The term "limited slip" refers to a product that limits wheel slip. As some have said, it really is an over-arching, general term that includes several different product types. Anything that is not strictly open and not full-locking. So, yes, Torsen (and other helical gear diffs) are limited...
  20. 2020 Ford Bronco CONFIRMED!

Well, Ford has so much as said that the Ranger would be a US-federalized version of the global Ranger. So, zero surprise there. They have also said that the Bronco would be a unique vehicle and not a rebadged Everest. So, though we don't know what that means per se, I wouldn't read too much...
