You read correct, and wow, $500 for a plate is cheap! there are plates being bought/ sold for $300K+ (1D being one of the most expensive i believe!). Thats a one time purchase price, we now retain that rego for 10 years whereby you will need to pay $120 for further retention. Here's a...

Probably a silly question...but here goes.! regarding the Sto N Sho, does the square plate fix by sticky pads or is screwed in...? (excuse my ignorance!)

I think the sto n sho is the way to go, i'll be taking a square plate also. You could probably get away with riding around with it in the boot.... "Sorry officer, forgot to re-fit, just been to a show/photoshoot!"
