Spoke with the Ford rep today. No work has been done, apparently the "tech" who was supposed to look at the car is not at work so they've done nothing with it since I dropped it off last Monday. Going to pick it up today and take it to another dealership. We'll see if they can be bothered to...
In hindsight, this probably would've been the move. But, the issue didn't seem all that serious at first. More of a minor annoyance that I assumed was related to a malfunctioning sensor somewhere. If I had any indication this would become a multi-month sage I would've just turned around and...
This is an interesting case because I doubt a pre-purchase inspection would have shown much. The car doesn't retain error codes, and drives fine for a while, especially around town. Only after you drive it for awhile, and try to hold a cruising speed, does the issue start to become apparent...
Update from today: no update.
Ford rep says diagnostic work has yet to continue. Can't tell if the delay is at the dealer level or at Ford's level. I asked for more information.
Whether or not a buyback is an option is a somewhat nuanced proposition for a used car but one that may save us...
I received only the most summary description of what they did with the car last time they had it. We are getting very close to the buyback conversation... I think buy backs are a little more complicated for used cars but I'm going to start looking into my options.
Update from Ford: concern escalated to technical department. No further update expected until Monday, dealership unable to proceed without input from Ford I guess...
Another week bites the dust.
So I questioned the dealer about the mileage. The response was that the problem only became apparent after about 20 mins of driving, so they would take the car for 20-40 min drives when running diagnostics. Not sure if they took one of these rides after they changed the alternator, but I'd...
They drove the car about 150 miles... not sure when. Guess they didn't notice all the issues. A real simple one is that cruise control doesn't work. Guessing that's because the engine is surging/ missfiring enough to knock it off even when you can get it set. Should be a red flag.
Good idea, I'll leave a copy on the passenger seat when I drop it off haha.
Luckily, I finally have emails for the managers at the dealership I bought it from, the dealership that's doing the service, and a Ford rep and I emailed the entire group about the issue. I kinda feel bad for the...
Well, picked the car up last week. Service department gave me virtually no details about what they did to the car, but they claimed that the entire issue was related to the alternator. I was skeptical, but picked the car up and asked that a detailed explnation be provided. The service manager...
I'll mention it to them. Thanks for the info. I'd love it if this turned out to be a tuning ring or just an electrical gremlin rather than an engine replacement. Chomping at the bit to get the car back but still no answer about what's wrong with it.
Watched the review by Savage Geese yesterday:
Swear the one GM engineer was throwing shade at Ford when they were discussing the engine design. He says several times something along the line of this engine "actually being designed for the flat plane crank" and not "a normal engine with a...
We'll see, still waiting on an alternator to continue the diagnosis. If this really gets ugly I won't hesitate to drag both dealers and Ford to court. Car is too expensive to mess around. I have a case with Ford customer service, and the dealer that sold it to me is in the loop. I'm just...
No, I have no reason to believe the car was modified in any way. The dealership I bought it from confirmed to me that the warranty was intact.
tracking a track car should not cause engine failures.
Thanks for another great bit of info. I’ll be happy if it doesn’t need an engine replacement. A list of little problems that dealerships mistake for engine failure would be pretty handy, could save someone the cost of a Golf in an unnecessary repair.
They’re putting the new alternator in today...
Yeah I'm not trying to tell the dealership what to do so much as make sure that whatever is wrong is fixed correctly. You better believe I'll be checking the compression in cyl. 5 when I pick the car up
Thanks for the heads up, I'll mention the Tone Ring if I speak with the dealership today. Like I said, they're following the diagnostic procedure required by Ford prior to an engine replacement so we will see what happens next. Seems unlikely to me that a tech didn't do a compression test...
Yeah, hopefully everything checks out. I certainly did not agree to take on the risk of a tuned or abused car, and I expect that Ford will cover whatever work is necessary under warranty.
