I haven't had this issue for quite a while but for me it was spark plug gap. Have you checked it yet? Even managed to get a couple logged misfires (ie check engine light). Hasn't happened since plugs were gapped. How hard were you on the throttle? And I'm in Virginia too.

I kept my S197. It's now being turned into my track car. I love the S550 but truth be told if I hadn't had the S197 I'd probably be in an E92 M3 right now. My advice hang on a little bit and get another S197. Prices are pretty low on the 4.6 cars right now as well.

About 10 years ago I used a high flow cat from Random Technologies on my turbo BMW. It was 304 stainless construction, thick walled, and well made. I would use one again. But it's been 10 years there may be better options I'm unaware of.
