No I didn’t, I felt that was overkill as well. Just make sure the splitter is wet enough to allow you to manipulate the letters since the spaces have insets for the letter. Using s hair dryer or something to help with the bonding helped as well. Good luck!

Here is a pretty good video. I personally didn’t purchase all of the recommended supplies but the overall process worked well for me. Third time installing letters and this video was very helpful.
