I was in the same dilemma until I drove a 6 speed GT with a Wippel, I didn't like it...too hard to manage the imediate boost for my admittedly meager driving skills...so I went centi on my Bullitt, much "easier" to manage the power which is linear and comes in "softly" higher up in rev range...I...
Good call, I had this debate with myself prior to ordering my ESS kit, decided on the strait cuts and have no regrets, just enough whine to show a bit of "badass" attitude...
I am also curious as to the opinions/experiences on the use of this setup as I have one in a box which my "go to shop" was reluctant to install when we went boosted on my Bullitt, as the car wasn't going to be a track car...
I have the strait cut gears on my G3X with a 120 pully on my Bullitt and don't find the whine at all obnoxious quite the contrary, it serves as a warning to the "rice rocket" pilots at the "stop lite nationals"....
I have the GT350/Mach1 setup of wheels and CUP2s on my boosted Bullitt and they work real well on track and for serious street encounters...that said, they do tramline on worn roads and aren't worth a crap in the rain, not to mention that with a 200 tread wear and only 5/32nd of tread to begin...
I was just pulling your chain about the color choice, when I got mine I didn't even know they came in black...and seen the movie when it first came out at a drive in through the windshield of a '67 GT (390 4 speed) however it was silver and not DHG...but I replaced it with a dark green '70 Mach...
Good looking Bullitt...even if it is black... I agree that the PS4AS tires do come up a bit short compared to the 4S but I cured that problem on mine with Cup2s on GT350 wheels, however it is ESS boosted
I have pretty much the same ESS setup on my Bullitt and went through the tire selection process the hard way, buy trial and error...as I live in central FL summer tires are year around tires ...I ended up with Cup2s in 305 & 315s on 10.5 & 11 GT350 wheels, this setup handles the power well in...
In my opinion it's all worth doing as I have done it all to my Bullitt and have no regrets other than being a bit lighter in the wallet, however I did the chassis mods in preparation for F/I which has been done as well, I wanted the car to be capable of handling the power boost competently...
Well, after a lot of "research" and having previously had both PD & turbo cars I went with ESS, plenty of manageable power on demand which is a good thing in a manual car, as for reliability that's up to how much boost you run and how you use it....i'm at 9psi on 93 octane and don't hammer the...
I live in a small town of about 2500 population in central Florida and you see way more Super Dutys than Mustangs, but we do have 2 Bullitts...so much for exclusivity, had the same problem with my C5 Z06 LeMans edition, guess I'll have to find something more unique next time.
I have an ESS kit on my Bullitt with a Wengard 93 octane tune and it did change the "rice crispy" sounds from the factory tune, it still farts and pops, just not as much...it's all good.
I can identify with your delema, as my local "friendly Ford dealer" tried to put me in a previously owned GT500 about a year ago...it was tempting, since they offered me close to full window price for my Bullitt against the 98K ask for the GT500, but having to anty up 50K was a tough call for...
