  1. 2015-17 Mustang GT Ford Performance Power Packs

In my opinion, PUP 0W-40 would be a good alternative track oil over MC or Lucas 5W-50's. However Lucas 5W-50 was formulated for Ford's spec and is used in the Cobra Jet drag cars, so it's also a good option. Ss I've shared, GTL base stocks are VERY robust for their cost and perform on par with...
  2. 2015-17 Mustang GT Ford Performance Power Packs

I posted this over in another thread, but it's a good summary of what we know for sure at this point:
  3. Anyone changed there oil to 5w30 and encounter a problem, failure or any weird noises?

I like to summarize things as the information is a bit scattered, here is a summary of what we know regarding the differences in oil viscosity specifications across the various Coyote based Mustangs: S197 Chassis (1st Gen 5.0) 2011-2014 Mustang GT - 5W-20 for US and no oil cooler 2011-2014...
  4. Anyone changed there oil to 5w30 and encounter a problem, failure or any weird noises?

Just wanted to add some interesting information. I have suggested there was a possibility that the ECU calibration could be a sticking point due to how the cam phasors are calibrated regarding viscosity at the behest of Ford Performance. That appears to NOT be the case regarding ECU calibration...
  5. 2015-17 Mustang GT Ford Performance Power Packs

I'm still on 5W-20 but am really contemplating switching over to 5W-30. I get a mild ticking at idle some times as well after normal driving that can only be heard when parked next to a car. I do not believe it to be abnormal and it comes and goes, some days I can hear it other days I can't, but...
  6. 2015-17 Mustang GT Ford Performance Power Packs

I think their primary goal is more a focus on handling and reliability rather than raw power. Remember those are instructors cars, so their purpose is to teach new drivers the ins and outs of performance driving. Not to win races or go as fast as possible around the track. They run BG Goodrich...
  7. Thoughts on why the 500 was made if the 820S fits?

Ford Racing FL820 is something completely different all together. Not related to the 820S. FL-500S has 150 sq in of filter media rated for 30 microns at 95% eff. The Ford Racing FL820 has 283 sq inches of mixed synthetic / cellulose media rated for 20 microns at 99% eff, higher flow rates...
  8. 2015-17 Mustang GT Ford Performance Power Packs

Seems to me for extended track sessions (HPDE), 5W-40 or 5W-50 is in order for the 2015-2017 GT's especially on the stock cooling system. With oil temps in the 260 to 280 F range, 5W-40 / 5W-50 will be equivalent to what 5W-20 would be at 210~220 F on the street or drag strip or auto x run (oil...
  9. 2015-17 Mustang GT Ford Performance Power Packs

Next my debate is on oil viscosity. I'm still investigating the use of 5W-30 for hard street / light track on the 2015 - 2017 GT's. There are a wide range of viscosity used on this engine. Bearing clearances aren't really the issue in terms of viscosity and here's why: factory clearance range is...
  10. AEM DryFlow filter review.

If you change your intake tube and the tube wasn't designed to work with the stock ECU maps, you can lean out the air/fuel mixture. The air flow sensor will read one thing, but actual flow will be different, so the ECU will be working from bad information. The ECU is calibrated to assume certain...
  11. AEM DryFlow filter review.

A large conical paper filter will out flow a drop in AFE panel filter AND has about 4x the dust capacity. Over 30k miles, no contest, the OE GT350 conical paper filter wins in the GT350 intake setup. The difference in flow between dry and paper is pretty meaningless. They are almost the same...
  12. Who Tunes your 5.0? And Why?

The first rev of the calibration had an issue with throttle surging when not up to temp. They fixed it and offered and updated revision free of charge. They even allowed owners to program it themselves without going back to the dealer as it's pretty fool proof. There are stock cars with those...
  13. Who Tunes your 5.0? And Why?

Exactly right, the biggest downside is upgrade path. You get what you get. But what you get is very well put together. There's the thing, your NOT going to make a whole lot more meaningful power over these tunes on pump gas with similar hardware. So no one would want to upgrade from a Power Pack...
  14. AEM DryFlow filter review.

I run the VelossaTek Big Mouth with my Ford Performance Power Pack 2 that uses the GT350 CAI. I just had to use a little aluminum flashing and foil tape to close up the small gap between the GT350 air duct and the GT OE radiator ducting as the GT350 air ducting is just a bit smaller and leaves a...
  15. Who Tunes your 5.0? And Why?

Just wanted to re-iterate, i have no issues with after market tuners for more exotic setups like E85, big power FI setups, Nitrous etc. Just don't see a point for pump gas tunes however as the Ford Performance offerings are hard to beat as an over all package.
  16. AEM DryFlow filter review.

There are other ways to get both flow and filtration efficiency. Most people don't realize that the dust capacity of these re-usable filters is 1/2 to 1/3 as much as a paper filter. So if you only clean your air filter ever 30k miles, it will out flow the paper equivalent (pane to panel, or...
  17. Who Tunes your 5.0? And Why?

Ford Performance. Reliability, emissions compliance, OE drive ability and covered under warranty for street use / light track use is hard to beat. I doubt any of the tuners go through all 2400+ cells in the PCM maps one by one and modify all of them for the specific hardware changes, then...
  18. What oil do you use?

BTW, straight from Ford Performance Racing School:
  19. Anyone changed there oil to 5w30 and encounter a problem, failure or any weird noises?

Something very interesting I just found out from the Ford Performance Racing School. I was very curious to see what Ford Racing runs on their 2015 PP GT instructor cars. These cars feature full roll cages, Ford Performance Track Pack suspension, 4 point harness, racing seats, differential...
  20. What oil do you use?

Not arguing that reality one bit. I posted a while back that Clevite (who I think is the OE supplier for the 5.0's rod bearing shells) suggests that 30 weight oils producing 10 cSt at 100C are the ideal balance between drag losses, cooling and film strength. Chevy's LT1 calls for 5W-30, but does...
