When to give up when it comes to car repairs

I have a 2017 Mustang GT and I am currently dealing with a front end noise that the shop I usually go to can’t figure out.

It’s like a clunking noise, it sounds awful. Over bad bumps or suspension compressions.

They said all the bushings look fine, car drives great, alignment was set a year ago and just checked and it’s set exactly where it was when I got new tires a month ago.

I’m so over spending money on this thing, 76k miles and just suspension noise after suspension noise.

Am I over reacting? Do I take it to an actual ford dealer? Any ideas?

Car doesn’t pull, it doesn’t drive weird. I don’t know what to think but to think a shop I always go to, doesn’t have any idea where the noise would come from but it’s “safe to drive on.” Sigh


The noise ended up being my g trac brace from Steeda.. removed it and the clunking stopped.

Your best bet is to search around this forum and around the internet.... Theres always someone else thats had your problem, and found a solution, and shared it with others... you just have to be willing to put in the time to look around and find it...

The hard part is it is hard to exactly tell if a noise is similar to the one I have. I’d post a video but it says it’s too long to post here.

I’ve had it on my front suspension front passenger side only for the last few weeks. My main worry is something breaking. I’d bet it’s a control arm but I can’t believe a shop couldn’t get any play out of it. But who knows.

Ive solved every single problem Ive had with my car simply by searching this forum obsessively enough until I found someone else who had the same problem.

This place is an invaluable resource to have, and the older your S550 is, the more likely youll be able to find the answer.

I’m willing to do the research past what I have, however I’m just not sure if I should be worried until I can take it somewhere.

The noise really bothers me , however I can look past it if I know it’s not going to kill me. The car drives great.

I just swapped out the Swaybar links a few weeks ago due to the noise and no change.

Isolator vibration mounts? For the springs?

I'm such a broken record sometimes sry. I'll bet you a dollar it's Swaybar Endlinks. Every shock, spring, configuration I've had on the front of an S550 has eventually started making swaybar end link noise. It's a clunk, really reliable clunk, and also random clunks at times.

I chock it up to a couple things, mainly how hard it is for me to put hella lb-ft on that top nut of the endlink. Second, both at work and at home I have a steep transition that puts my left front up the transition first, and I "almost 2 wheel it" before it levels out...at least 4 times per day (if I don't, I'll scrape the splitter).

Lastly, I've tightened it plenty of times, it'll be completely quiet for a couple weeks and then I'll start clunking again. It's never felt loose when I check it. I've locktite'd them, maybe they held longer idk, but eventually clunked again. But when I had to remove them, I had to cut them off (couldn't get the nut off, dur). Then I replaced them with aftermarket endlinks and I had a good run, but about a month ago, they started clunking again. There's a lot of thread on the links, I'm going to try to double nut it next time I have the wheel off.

Funny, first time I tried to retighten the links I definitely didn't get them tight enough, thought maybe it was strut bearings, replaced strut bearings (had to remove the endlinks again) and it made no difference. After reading some threads on here, I tightened the ever living sh*t out of them with a box wrench and a pipe and they were quiet....for a bit.

how the sway bar mounts to the frame , holds the sway bar in place one at each end.

That's not a bad idea, heck undo both sides and zip tie the swaybar up or something.

Eh, I mean it could be a lot of things, but I've not yet had an engine mount go bad on an s550, but I'd assume you would get clunking on shifts more than just little bumps in the road. Get a pry bar and check them while you're down there.
