What's with the occasional requests to prove that I'm not a robot?

This has started happening on a random basis, always in the middle of an established session. Not as part of a new member signup (which I would understand), and not even for post submittal (which would still be a stretch even if it was for discouraging spam posts). As a long-term active member (7+ years, 15th most posts, usually here on a daily basis) I find this annoying, and I'm not understanding any reason for it at all.

It's part of the measures we implemented recently to beef up security against spam and nefarious activity. But it should only pop up from time to time (not many times per session or per day).
