It would be nice to have a gearing kit to change our steering ratio from 16:1 to something like 13:1 or 14:1. I have not dug into the rack to see how feasible this would be, though. I think this would be nice for daily driving as well as autocross folks where you really need to crank a lot of wheel angle on to get the car turned.

Thoughts?

BmacIL I've thought about this because compared to my Focus ST the Mustang steering rack is slow as a slug but the reason for that is the rear end is doing the business. I can see a faster steering rack getting a lot of people in trouble with the rear end stepping out. Would definitely be interesting to try though.

Possible, but potentially easier to correct with a faster ratio. Double edged sword really. Skilled driver would get a lot out of it.

Smaller steering wheel?
Doesn't change the number of turns to do the same thing, just where your hands are. It takes more than 90 degrees of lock to do many maneuvers that I wish it took less.

They make steering quickeners. I had one in a Lotus 7 replica and it seemed like it hurt the steering feedback.

The only other option is a whole new rack. Which is rather pricey.

Smaller steering wheel?
And should require more leverage from your arms therefore more driver fatigue. Been down that road on a 1969 F100. Bus steering wheel to 14" Grant wheel with no power steering. I know its apples to oranges comparison.

Can this be accomplished with the valving?? I believe the Focus ST is a variable ratio rack. Im not 100% sure how these electric racks work, valving, voltage, pressure??

Frankly I think I'd prefer it. Feel the wheel is a smidge too big as is and steering is a smidge to light as is. Won't find me spending the money to experiment there but... ya know... I think I'd like a smaller wheel.

I don't believe ours is variable ratio, only variable assist.

http://howeracing.com/index.php/store/steering/steering-quickeners/ratio-box-1-5-1.html

Run the steering shaft fron the wheel into the quickener. Then output shaft feeds the rack.

May add another joint, plus the quickener itself. So the extra hardware seemed to dampen or filter some of the steering feel/feedback.

Probably hard to package in the Mustang. Seems like someone was doing or talking about doing a bolt on quicker for the Impreza before I sold off the STI.

I would kind of like a smaller wheel. But I don't want to lose all the on wheel controls. Plus you can't get much smaller before the wheel starts blocking the gauges.
