Hello, I've just purchased and fitted the competition cat back to my gt.Its fit
And construction are first class. It looks amazing and sounds great from the outside!
However I chose this because in the demo vids etc it's said it's got little to no drone.Unfortunatly I've never had an exhaust that drones so bad,to the point of being almost undrivable.Has anyone else got the same setup, and if so how do you find it.Can it be altered in anyway to sort out the drone.I hope someone can help as it's seriously doing my head in .I want the classic rumble sound but no drone PLEASE HELP
I purchased it from Steeda uk who I found them to be well priced and quick turn around.

It'll drone if you're accelerating in 6th under 65mph; if you're cruising at 70 there's 0 drone. However; during the bedding in of most exhaust (300-600miles) most of them drone, sound loud as stonk etc. It'll calm down.

I'd speak to Steeda, but to be honest, listening to it on YouTube, I'm not surprised that there is drone.... It's such a deep sound, and at quite high volume.

Noise is a form of energy, it has to go somewhere....:)

Maybe you could fit a resonator to tone it down a bit:shrug:

Thanks guys,it really is quite bad at just about any speed in any gear when under load. For some I'm sure it would be acceptable but for me when I'm just cruising around I like a burble not a deafening drone.I had a Monaro before with rear boxes changed and was obviously spoilt as this had absolutely no drone ever. But hay ho I will remove it and put it up for sale so if anyone wants a magna flow competition cat back get in touch.Just need to decide what to replace it with,I'm thinking either Rouch axle back or possibly Borla cat back.I intend to go forced induction so not sure what would be best.So any advise would be greatly received cheers

Roush AB with a H pipe seems to be the tone for ultimate burble. Dunno on the drone front.

Had the Borla touring catback fitted this week, sounds like it should have donè from the factory. Zero drone, sounds great when you floor it.
As recommended by Enoch I think.

Long shot but adjust the exhaust so the tips stick further out
The back, I had to mess with my 350 exhaust makes a massive difference to mine.

I think there is something in this. I have fitted the MagnaFlow Street cat back and whilst there is no drone when cruising around 2k there is a loud resonant boom as you go through 1200-1500 rpm under load. The rest of the time it's a lovely throb or rumble. Bearing in mind mind I have a convertible it almost seems louder with the top up which suggests some resonance somewhere. I'm going to try adjusting the respective pipe lengths before and particularly after the X and give a bit more poke to the tips to see what changes. Everyone says neither the street or comp MFs drone so there must be a solution.

I have the Borla S Type cat which is great until you change up to 6th around 50mph, it then drones really bad, change into 6th above 65mph and it's fine.

What do you want MF to do?

I ran orx MF comps and cat deletes in my 2012, the setup was surprisingly tame. Drone was hardly noticeable, and would only occur at a certain rpm.
For the op to say that "the drone is to the point of being almost undrivable", leads me to believe OP is being a bit of a diva.

OP you picked up a competition exhaust, don't mistake drone for tone.

Hi just to add my thoughts, and very sorry you arent keen on the sound so far:

1. As Manders said exhaust systems often sound harsher initially until they have bedded in / coked up on the inside. It's always best top judge sound after a couple of hundred miles.

2. If you [and by that I mean any potential buyer] are concerned about sound being intrusive, especially on cruise, then always opt for a "Street" style system rather than a "Comp / Race" style one, as they have much larger and more capable resonators which are designed to control sound better.

To Yendor66 thanks for your purchase, and of course I have a load of experience with exhausts so this is not meant as in any way a criticism of your purchase choice. One thing I have learned over many years of dealing with exhaust sales is that there is no "correct" answer, as one mans "too loud" is the next man's "too quiet!" and unfortunately you can usually only find out what is best for you once its fitted and you have lived with it for a while.

While Youtube and shows / meets / rides can all help you decide, even then, only once installed on your car with you driving and living with it can you really know if you got it right.

Completely agree with Robbie.... I went with a street touring system, and even then got it wrong..

Luckily the manufacturer I chose had options to modify, so I managed to change it to better suit my requirements:)

Did you have drone before you made modifications, I thought it was just too loud?

This is why I spent nearly a year researching what exhaust on the American section and the general consensus from our American friends at the time was Corsa Sport/Extreme and the Borla/FRPP options were the only 100% drone free exhaust.

Corsa use some sound deflection technology which works, a little too well if you ask me because my Corsa Sport on the outside is as loud as the FRPP/Borla sport system, but inside the car it has zero drone but it is also much quieter exhaust noise wise as well, which sometimes is annoying but at other times the silence is nice.

As a test I can floor mine in 5th or 6th from 1000rpm right upto around 90mph and there is never even a hint of drone, buzzing, humming or what could be considered drone.

The deepest sounding exhaust I have heard on the US side which sounds amazing and is loud is the Borla Atak, this came out after I got my Corsa Sport otherwise I would of probably tried that because just as a catback I do wish my Corsa Sport was louder at times on the interior. But I do plan on headers and headers will wake up any catback system and interior noise in the car vastly.

No drone, not even to loud, just way to much rasp....

My point was that despite 6 months research, and lots of experience with TVR & Aston Martin exhausts, I still managed to get it not quite right:doh:

Luckily Borla had a solution, that meant I didn't have to sell and start again...

I don't know if MF have something similar?.....maybe a resonator or different end cans to tone it down a bit:shrug:
