Out of State purchase

Good evening,

I need advice, I am about to pull the trigger on a AG Tech Pack (putting deposit tomorrow to hold the car until i close escrow).
My question is, I dont want to fly out to the dealer and look at the car.
Is this a good idea?
Do i need to ask certain questions since i will not be looking at it in person?

Question for you, is the sales tax refundable meaning, in the state where im buying the car, KS 9.4%, and in the count where i live in CA which is 8.25%. I am just assuming the tax in NY is more than in CA. Thanks!

My dealer is charging me my local tax rate(which is higher than their tax rate), so when I register it at the DMV, I only pay the registration fees. On the DMV website, they have the calculator where it'll ask you how much tax you paid where you bought the car, and in my case, since it's my local tax rate, it just shows me the registration fees. Like krt22 said, you might be SOL if you have to pay more though.

I'd get in contact with your dealer, and using the advice given in this thread, to try to defer the sales tax so you can pay it here in CA instead. Or at the very least, try to get them to charge you your local tax rate.

Another novice question, usually the taxed are added to the loan of the car but since i am purchasing out of state and physically registering the car at the DMV, does this mean i will pay the registration and taxes at the time of registration?

If you are doing the registering yourself at the CA DMV they will require you to pay the tax at the time of registration.

If you want to roll your taxes into the financing I think you have several options. Your dealer can definitely help you with this.
1. You can have them register it for you in CA using a 3rd party service and they'll collect tax at the time of the sale
2. If you get your financing from someone other than the dealer I think you can just roll that into the total amount financed and use the additional left over to pay the taxes.
3. Pay less money down and save the rest for when you personally register it at the DMV.

If you have The Certificate of Origin you can register it at AAA, you will need a smog cert as well. No DMV hassle for me.

I called my local branch and they wouldn't do it due to the required dmv inspection. Although the they did say that was a Northern California policy, might be different for so cal

There are companies out there that will send a guy to look over and document a cars condition. I have used lemonsquad several times when purchasing my 1999 -2001 jeep xj's. It cost like $130 and they take pics, document any flaws and at the end give you a full report with comments, pics and a final grade. It's a pair of eyes when you can't be there. In one case thank god I hired them because the jeep I was buying on eBay and the jeep lemonsquad documented was a totally different jeep and saved me from getting ripped off. At the very least I would hire one and you can let them know what to look for based on info from this forum. The $130 could save you a lot of headaches if they catch something.

Thomas runs a class operation....his veins have motor oil in them. Our cars are priceless to us, but he is transporting multi-millions of dollars around. I used Intercity...could not have happier 900 miles for $1,200.00.

If you guys financed, did you guys get the manufacturers certificate of origin? Apparently either that, or temp tags(which my dealer's state does not issue), or the title itself is necessary to register the car in CA.

I did local financing through my credit union and had my credit union wire the money directly to the Nebraska Ford dealer. I then wired the remaining through Chase to the Dealer. The Chase transaction was done in minutes, but my credit union took 2 days just to move 25k!! :doh:

You should be okay with just the bill of sale?? When I originally went to the DMV they where rather surprised I had the Certificate of Origin. I think this is typically sent to the lending institution.

One of the requirements says: The Manufacturer's Certificate/Statement of Origin (MCO/MSO) properly endorsed to the purchaser. Bills of Sale are acceptable in lieu of endorsement(s) on the MCO/MSO.

I guess it is like you said, but I'm gonna contact my dealer again tomorrow and ask him about the MCO. I'd rather have both the MCO and bill of sale in my hand for the DMV if possible. Thank you for your input!
