60's Fastback exhaust sound

That sounds like it's straight through & running a lumpy cam as well.

The video sounds like flowmaster mufflers, probably 40 series. Even if you go with flowmasters on a 2015 mustang it won't sound exactly the same. The 65' had mid mount mufflers and the 2015 has rear mounted which changes the sound. The 5.0 coyote motor has a unique sound also that even with the exact same exhaust setup will sound different than the old 289 and 302's.

I use to get compliments about every day by the jeweler that worked next to the bank I worked at. He said my exhaust (mbrp street) sounded just like the older muscle cars of the 60s. Made me feel great every time he said it, which was a lot haha

The original 289, 302 firing order was the 15426378, later they switched the 302 over to the 351W firing order 13726548. The new coyote does have a different firing order from the old pushrod engines. I'll see if I can find what the coyote firing order is.

Nice one, yeah i'd just noted mine down from a video i vaguely remember watching comparing the GT to the GT350 and it explained how the GTs engine fires 'weirdly' that produces the burble sound, but the 350Rs fires in the 'correct' order.

I agree the MBRP has that old school muscle car sound with it being an H-pipe helps, the X-pipe kind has a just little more exotic sound.

I believe if you fit a muffler where the the x-pipe goes on most kits (resonator location) gives you your best chance to obtain that sound . Tailpipes play a big part in that classic exhaust note . You'll have to find a dual in and dual out muffler since there isn't enough room for two mufflers in that location . I believe borla has one that fits .

Whats missing on the new cars is volume and colour at low revs. I think the '68 sounds at its best from tick over, probably up to about 3.5k revs. A very deep and hollow sounding growl. I know mush of this will be from factors other than the exhaust system but I'll bet you could get close with the right aftermarket setup. If anyone cracks it, let me know!

I don't think those two cars could ever sound the same. The reason the 390 has that lovely low tone is the engine capacity - something round 6.5 litres (think the noise from an AMG 63).

Round the front or on the inside of the car you get carburettor induction roar which is a louder though duller sound than today's fuel injected engines.

I should have mentioned for the vid I posted that my car (a 289 HiPo) also sounds completely different from a stock 289 2 or 4 barrel. The hydraulic valves on those cars give the engine a softer more silky tone.

They also (typically) have no connection between left and right hand pipe. That means you get the uneven staccato sound at idle heard in Croyde's vid - because there is a burst of sound from one exhaust, and then a burst from the other as the cylinders go through the firing order. If you were to go round the front end of the car it would seem to be idling quite smoothly.

Most modern V8's have a crossover point somewhere in the system and I think that's what happens in the resonator box of the S550. So you don't tend to get such a characterful idle noise.
