I have a 2016 Mustang GT Automatic with 12,000 miles. Last Saturday I went to the store and when I came out I could not start he car. I pressed the start button and it kept cranking until I hit the button again. I assumed the battery was bad, so I had my son jump it, it took about 20 mins, but I got it started.

when I got it home I put a trickle charger on it over night, but it did the same thing…when I pressed the start button the car would crank until I hit the button again. I had the battery checked and it’s good. I also tried using the battery out of my son’s mustang GT with the same result. The interesting thing is with either battery fully charged and a jump pack on the car it would start.

other than the non-start issue, all light works (not dim at all) and found no codes. Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks,

Mark

That’s what I was thinking. Or a bad battery cable.

If it’s cranking fine and you tried 2 different batteries as well as jumped it and it turned over fine, look at a fuel issue. This isn’t a battery problem.

Listen carefully for the fuel pump priming, can you hear it?

keep a can of starting fluid nearby. Next time it does this, give it a little spray of starting fluid, if it starts for a second the. You know it’s a fuel issue. Could be a pump going bad and the extra voltage is giving the pump a little extra power to get it running.

I thought that too, but why would the car start and run fine if I put a jump box on a good battery?

What kind of battery is on your car, it should have atleast 600 cold crank amps to get the car started. You might have a battery not cranking enough amps. Especially since it starts with a jump.

Motorcraft came with the car, it’s about 2 years old. The other one is an Interstate which is about a year old. I’ve got it in a heated garage right now and it won’t start without a jump box.

I had something very similar to this on my last ’19….very frustrating! After playing with it for a bit it turned out to be a faulty fuse for the fuel pump. Sounds like yours is turning on though….mine was only working intermittently.

I didn’t find any blown fuses.

Perhaps the check valve for the fuel pump is faulty, allowing the pressure to bleed down after the car is off for a while. A leaking fuel injector can lead to the same condition but will usually result in a specific cylinder misfire after starting as well. Put a pressure gauge on the fuel line to check for pressure problems.

I love reading threads like this one. I try to soak in as much as I can just in case I come up on any issues in the future.

I had the same issue not long ago. Turns out it was a bad fuel relay. It's one of the black squares in the fuse box. Cost about 40 bucks to get a new one at Ford.
