Hi everyone.

I’m from UK and just picked up my 18’ GT. only 350 mile on the clock. Been reading about the Americans issue with piston slap, ticking, knocking etc when reaching 2000 rpm. If I sit in neutral. Warm or cold and blip the revs I get a metallic tinny knocking sound. It reminds me of old cars when the cams went and big ends etc. I really wasn’t expecting this.. it can also be heard when driving around certain rev levels.

So many Americans talking about this issue but not in UK? Booked in on Monday but I’m sure I’ll get fobbed off and told it’s ‘normal’ can any of my fellow brits help me here! Please?

Here is a small clip of the sound (worse in the flesh) -

Thanks

Daniel

hand the car back walk away to another dealership and get a different one. ford uk will never admit there's a problem with it as even in the states there's not a recall tsa on them.

What a disappointment, especially with so few miles on. The Coyote 5.0 has been around for many years now and has had a great reputation
as far as I am aware. Looks like they may have dropped the ball with these judging from the issues now appearing.

Yeh I’m absolutely distraught about it :-/ perfect dream car with an engine that sounds like that, only had it 4 days.. if ford can do anything then great, I’m not holding my breath) but if not I think I’ll have to hand it back much to my disappointment. Just shocked there aren’t more complaints in the UK as mine isn’t an import of different etc

Thanks for your reply

I'm no expert, but other than a slight noise in the first second or two i'm not hearing anything.
My only suggestion regarding getting Ford to admit a problem is that long-time forumite @Gibbo205 had a friendly/useful Ford dealer local to you - Burns of Congleton I think - and it might be worth getting them to have a listen.
Gibbo or @Manders Mustang could probably confirm that dealer name.

Can you take a recording from outside the car?

maybe then?

Perhaps me. I'll start off by saying that my "issue" may or may not be what you are experiencing, so I'll try to explain best I can.

Must admit as well, that I can't hear anything unusual in your video.

What I personally can hear, and have done since day 1, is what I describe as a metallic whirring noise, or rattle. Most noticeable at low revs <2k and when releasing the clutch to get on the gas. Occasionally as well, as soon as I start the engine I'll hear a bit of a rattle, sounding like it's coming from the gearbox area (rather than the engine).

I've been told by several Ford garages, other owners and even specialists that this is indeed normal. Hard for me to accept as I'm on my second S550 now & can't recall a similar noise in the Ecoboost. I was with a friend a couple of month ago - he's had his 2015 GT since the very start, and his makes exactly the same noise, perhaps a little better masked because of his Roush exhast! but it's still there.

Apparently this is common and more pronounced in some cars than others; a well trusted Ford technician did a comparison for me with another GT and actually said the other was worse than mine. Good to know. They even admitted to completely stripping a gearbox to fault find on an older model, Ecoboost I think, but to no avail. From my research, some insist that its the clutch throwout bearing, but if it was that definitive, Ford would know about it, so perhaps not.

I'm probably of a similar mindset of you - I called my sales man after a couple of days who assured me it was normal, and on & off over the past 18 months I've had more reassurance from other sources that it's nothing to be concerned with. Right now, I don't like it, but I'm satisfied that it's normal & I live with it. The MT-82 transmission is noisy & clunky anyway, and always difficult to compare your issues with others as we all pick up different subtleties and describe issues in different ways.

Hope that helps mate, try to forget about it & enjoy the car if you can!

Really appreciate that. Congleton isn’t too far from me at all, the noise does appear when driving too.. if I could be told it’s harmelss and what exactly it is I could try and live with it but the sound reminds me of serious problems I’ve found with older cars in the past

I can’t tell you how helpful that message was.. I’m 100% certain the noise I am getting is the same as the one you are describing. I can hear through the gear change at times and yes, like it’s coming from the glove box. I think my problem is, as a new car I wasn’t expecting this noise and I had an Audi A4 that had a duel mass flywheel issue and it made this noise (when you rode the clutch or changed gear) and it was deemed faulty by audi etc, anyway it was a nightmare and it just feels like it’s all coming back but this time with £40k and not £8k which that cost me!!
Like you, if ford can gaurentee no seriousness and maybe explain to me (albeit you have) I’d probably feel even better.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. ONE LAST thing, if it’s gearbox related how can it be heard with the clutch pressed down?

Thanks

Funny how all (a hell of a lot!) of Americans with this noise are wanting their money back and new engines but the UK folk see to be able to accept it is just a trait of the car

Glad I could help :)

Regarding the clutch - what I mean is when you're in the motion of changing gears, I see this in 1st/2nd mainly - when you are crawling along at low speeds and bring the clutch up - getting "in to gear" so to speak, and start pushing on the accelerator, that's when the tinny rattle/whirring is most obvious.

For what it's worth, in my experience, it's more hassle than it's worth to take this up with Ford as a warranty claim (assuming yours is the same as mine), you may get lucky and find a super experienced/specialist Mustang technician that will give you the "this is normal" speech with some technical detail to back it up. But chances are you may end up with an inexperienced dealership/technicians troubleshooting your car when in fact they don't need to, which is stressful - believe me!

I don't have time to look now, but there are some posts in this UK section on the forum with my various findings and thoughts on this specific problem. I'm sure you could find them fairly easily with a search.

One final thought - what was an irritating and worrying issue to me was a "kind of cool, it sounds like a race car" noise to someone else. Remember these are Mustangs, what they lack in quality & refinement they more than make up for in their overall enjoyment!

P.s. get as much reassurance as you feel you need, I kept asking the question & it's now something i'm comfortable with.
