If it's in the condition the original owner states it's in that would be a great/fair deal. Check out Kelly Blue Book and see what the trade in value for that car is. That could give you a close idea what he may have taken for it trading it in.

You were pretty much spot-on. Top end KBB for a "Clean" (top-tier) trade was $47K. Looking at black book values, however, shows clean trade of $51K and 48K for an "average" one. A little bit of a delta there.

Yea, if he got over 50k on a trade he got a smokin deal. Those values would probably be more on par for a private party sale.

Avoid what, exactly? I'm assuming the original vehicle I was looking at. But considering you gave me some good pointers on that one earlier in this post (which I heeded) I'm not so sure you aren't speaking of @johnny1 's former ride - which seemed well cared-for.
