what are your thoughts on these as an aggressive weekend car for the street. anyone in here owned both? and how do these compare to the new nitto 555 g2 and htr z 3. and are any of these, like the htr z 3, down grades to the stock pp tires?
S04 and HTR Z III will be comparable to the P-zero. The P-zero isn't bad when it's hot, but it wears poorly and doesn't grip well enough to make up for it. MPSS will be the best overall. No experience with the new Nitto but I doubt it's better than the Super Sport, perhaps on a similar level.
On my Acura TL Type-S, I've had the HTR, Potenza and Pilot Sports (all-seasons of each). It's a front-wheel drive car with 286hp, so not apples to apples to the Mustang, but at least I can compare them all on the same car. Tire size for each was 235/45/17.
HTR lasted about 25K miles. They were great on dry roads, and had some trouble in rain/snow. Especially at lower treads (noticeably worse than Potenza/Pilot Sport when comparing at similar tread levels). Then I had the Potenzas. These were really good; rain, snow or dry. Last about 32k miles. Then I switched to the Pilot Sports, and they were better than the Potenza on dry roads, about same in rain/snow. Had just over 40K on them with still decent tread left before I ended up trading the car in.
So overall I'd say HTR << Potenza < Pilot Sport. I always rotated regularly.
My Mustang has always had the Pirellis, so can't compare much there (other than they have horrible grip in rain; even at full tread)
I love S04's ride, handling, and wear characteristics over most of these listed(including the best from Conti not listed)... but MPSS is definitely better if track days are more often in your rotation.
I had a really hard time sourcing mpss. Local mom n pop shops couldn't find em and tire rack gave me a couple months lead time. This was about a month ago though.
