So I’m currently looking at a 2017 GT premium auto. I’ve got a 2016 WRX that’s been issue free for 48k. I know forums are usually flooded with issues that aren’t as common throughout all vehicles but it’s raised a few concerns. This GT is at 4K miles so warranty is still good.

1. BBQ tick seems the most worriesome. Is there any solid any/fix on this yet?

2. AC coil almost seem inevitable to go bad.

3. Rough cost of extended warranty?

Any thoughts or other issues to be cautious on?

It's hard to say. I've got a 17 GT , it's at 13500 miles and so far the only issue it had was a leaky low pressure side valve on the AC which was covered by warranty. As for the tick, no issues so far. Myself, I've been letting the dealerships change the oil so they would have records of no mistakes of oil issues. That's just me. As for the extended warranty, it was around $1200 extra up to 75k miles on everything else beside powertrain. Powertrain is up to 100k miles. Also if AC condensor does go out, it's covered. Hope this helps a little.

The tic is for 2018 and up. The engine is a bit different.

The bbq tick seems to affect the direct injected engines (18 and up). The 15 to 17 models have known driveshaft issues. My 16 would shake and make a howling noise at around 70mph. It's hard to miss. No issues to report on 18...yet.

The BBQ tick has actually been around since 2011. However, It appears to be much less prevalent in model years prior to 2018. For what it's worth, I have the tick in my 2017 and it has not caused me any issues apart from being annoying - I've also been running a Roush phase 1 supercharger for a year now. Solid. No issues. I started using Ceratec back in the summer and haven't heard the tick since. I'd feel fine buying a 2017 over a 2018+, personally.
