Planning on measuring my brake pads soon, have to pick up a brake pad thickness gauge set. I believe I've seen that you can measure the front pads by just removing the wheel and you can see the brake pad through the caliper (FYI I have a PP1 so I've got the 6 piston Brembos up front). Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But how about the rears? Can you get to the pads by just removing the wheel or do you have to remove the caliper and get the pads out to measure?

A set of calipers and measure them. This only does you good when you measured the pad new. Manufacturers may use a different thickness backing plate. But yes you can visually see the pads with the wheels off. The front pads last longer if you swap them side to side and inner to outer because they will wear unevenly. More or less same applies to the rear. Inside could be down to the plate, outside pad will look new.

Depends on the use of the car.
