Hi all,

I'm planning to set my car up to run on E85 and would love to use it at the track, but many tracks don't have E85 available nearby. To haul E85 to the track, it appears I have two options:

  1. Two 55 gallon drums (blue plastic) and a pump
  2. Transfer tank with 12v pump

Is anybody doing either of these? Drums appear to be a much less expensive solution. It appears that I don't need CDL or Hazmat placard if I stay under 110 gal (1000#). With the transfer tank, it looks like the manufacturer has to supply documentation.

Am I missing anything?

Many tracks have rules about transporting in fuel, so definitely check those too.

You need 110 gallons of E85 for every event?
I'm trying to figure out how much I'll need but with E85 I'm guessing about 3mpg on track. Likely need to have 80gal or so.

I have wondered the same. Good E85R would be better than pump E85 as well so there is that as well. What holds me back are two issues: track regulations and what if it spills. 110 gallons is quite a mess and quite a bit of fluid. If the track allowed it, I would think they would want to know your plan if fuel spilled (absorbent material, damming, etc). I would think you would need to stock extinguishers rated for Class C fires with sufficient quantity to address a fuel fire. Lastly I would think you would need to convince the track that you will leave things the way you found it when you came.

Though I'm thinking most tracks won't want the liability.

I’m looking into this as sometimes we do a track weekend event. I have space in my trailer and this caddy takes up less space (footprint) than ( 4 ) five gallon jugs. Seems more tidy fueling than lifting a 35 pound jug couple times a day. Plus I’m not a fan of plastic jugs and the metal jerry cans are a bit thin so this is on the front burner before track season starts.

Rough estimate - typical track weekend is 3 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours track time (10 20-minute sessions plus a 40-min "happy hour"). I'll use 3-4 gallons a session at 5mpg, and expect that to become 4-5 gallons of E85, so as much as 60 gallons a weekend. Is your usage for a single day event?

I don't run E85, but I do bring 93 to the track with me so I don't have to pay triple at the track or leave after every session to fill up.

I use these FloFast 15 gallon cans. I have three of them and one pump that I move from tank to tank. If I show up to the track full, that's enough to get me through 6 sessions at Gingerman. You'd have to check on compatibility with E85 though. The pump is quick, has a grounding strap to help prevent static sparks, and overall is a pretty nice setup. It's already paid for itself after a few track days.

I use 35 gallons of e85 per day at a track like COTA. That comes in as 16 gallons full tank plus 4 x 5 gallon and a 2.5 gallon back up.

Then end of day I drive several miles to the nearest e85 station and do it all again.
