Seems to be a common theme that just randomly all the oil is gone and kerplunk.

How often were you all checking the oil? I get it - no matter what +5 quarts low out of nowhere is just obscenely irregular. But I'm trying to safeguard against this scenario myself and I'm not understanding how that much oil disappears between fueling intervals - or was the oil not being checked every fill up?

At least twice a week for me. More if I've tracked it or driven it in a spirited fashion a lot in a week etc.

That's about how often I check mine. Have you had an engine failure previously?

Yup, my previous 16 tech for excessive oil consumption. It was about a quart every 400ish miles give or take either way.

Ok - so in your case you were consuming too much oil so they replaced - but your actual engine didn't fail, or am I wrong?

Were you filling when it dipped below the bottom hole, top or?

Correct. I would fill it when it hit the bottom hole.

I check mine every 1000 miles or so. Added 4 quarts over 7000 miles between my last changes (~14,500 to ~21,500 miles). I am usually running near the bottom hole.

Engine is still running well...hopefully it will last.

EDIT: Oops, I forgot this was targeting people with replacement engines. I am on my original engine still, no replacement.
