S550 Mustang Global Sales Leader

We’ve covered in-depth the extraordinary sales resurgence the Mustang has had since the introduction of the S550 platform and newly released global sales data has further solidified the S550 Mustang as the leading sports coupe around the world.

According to registration data from IHS Automotive, Ford Motor Company sold approximately 110,000 Mustang fastback coupes and around 30,000 convertible Mustangs in 2015, making it the best selling coupe on Earth last year.

Now officially sold in 140 markets globally, the S550 had limited availability for most of 2015 in key markets such as China and the United Kingdom. Amazingly, this did not stop buyers from snatching up 141,868 Mustangs in all of its markets combined last year.

As new markets begin to take delivery of their full allotment of S550 Mustangs, the global sales upside continues to expand, and with higher prices overseas you may expect consumers to opt for the EcoBoost or V6 models but that has not been the case.

“While much of the growth in Mustang demand in the United States has come from coastal markets – especially Southern California – and millennials opting for the 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine, buyers in other countries prefer the V8,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst. “That unmistakable V8 warble is a hot commodity outside the U.S.”
