The right-wing element in congress loved what Hitler represented when compared to the idea of socialists taking root (everything is socialism when the right don't want it), and they were fully prepared to support an American version of Hitler if the alternative was socialism taking root. Hell, there was even a real secret plot to launch a fascist coup, headed by none other than Senator Charles Lindbergh.

That tendency hasn't died out; it never went away. Just look at how gullible people are on any media platform. People LOVE to find hate groups that are convenient scapegoats. Everything is bad except for what they say, everything is spam except for the confirmation bias articles they post, etc.

It isn't hard to see how authoritarianism can take over. Look into "The Third Wave" an experiment, where a high school teacher created a fascist movement that took over his school and spread to neighboring schools in a few days.
