That's not the way Ford does it, they just ensure any write operation resets the key cycle counter. No need for any separate counter. That's what popped OP.Actually yes todays ECM's can tell if you have installed a tune, there is a counter in the ECM that keeps track of how many times the ECM has been flashed, it will not tell them what the tune was but they know how many times the ECM should show it was flashed as when it is connected to the dealers scan tool that communicated with the manufacture the number of flashes should match, if the ECM has more flash counts on it then it should that is an indication that there ECM has had a tune flashed to the ECM at some point.
Green Diesel Engineering point blank tells you that if you put their tune on a GM Diesel it will void the GM powertrain warranty because GM will know the ECM has been flashed.
People think they can just reinstall the stock tune and the dealer/manufacture will never know, well in the past you could get away with that but today they have ways to let them know the ECM has been flashed.
So the answer is yes your powertrain warranty can be voided if you flash a tune into the ECM.
Still waiting to hear what OP was doing when the engine failed.
He must have finally gotten the bill so he's probably never coming backStill waiting to hear what OP was doing when the engine failed.
Who has the capability of reading the "counter" and how do they do it?Actually yes todays ECM's can tell if you have installed a tune, there is a counter in the ECM that keeps track of how many times the ECM has been flashed, it will not tell them what the tune was but they know how many times the ECM should show it was flashed as when it is connected to the dealers scan tool that communicated with the manufacture the number of flashes should match, if the ECM has more flash counts on it then it should that is an indication that there ECM has had a tune flashed to the ECM at some point.

Ford IDS has access to the ignition event counter.Who has the capability of reading the "counter" and how do they do it?
I understand, but that’s not what I asked. I was referencing the quoted flash counter. Event counter is not conclusive evidence.Ford IDS has access to the ignition event counter.
As I said in an earlier response, there isn't one. And to be fair, an event counter is absolutely conclusive evidence. Ford doesn't care about why the ECU was written to or how, they just know that factory software was altered in some way. If there's no approved warranty or dealer reason, then that's all they need.I understand, but that’s not what I asked. I was referencing the quoted flash counter.
