Why are the rain tray screws so long?

I really wanted to use those, Tob but, it would have required rounding out the square holes from the Python mold to jibe with the nylon nuts. For the time being, I passed on that eye deer and if the thumbscrews hold it well enough, then I'll be a happy camper without the rivnuts. They can always be added.

Look closer my friend. Those rivnuts are for a square opening...

How do rivnuts work? I’m going to assume they are riveted in based on their name? I’m really clueless on these lol.
That’s exactly right. There’s a special tool that threads into the riv-nut and crimps it in place. Then your a bolt or whatever hardware you use threads into the riv-nut.

So much for MY "attention to detail" Tob and of course, if anyone knew about square rivnuts, you'd be the guy. :-) So, what's the official designation for these things so I can order some?

Thanks, amigo.

@kilobravo I'm not so sure crimping a rivnut into the plastic of the hood vent is gonna work tho... hard enough so it won't spin is probably just about 5psi into crack the hood vent plastic territory...

And it's not really the clips that suck either.

I mean - don't get me wrong - I love me a good nut, riv or otherwise - I rivnutted in the trunk for trunk pulls... but I'd be worried about that vent material and nutting in it. :giggle:

There are rivnuts made specifically for plastic that are pre-bulbed.

There's always a way to skin a cat. If this is too much for anyone here, I'd suggest selling the car, taking up knitting, and buying an electric car. You'll be able to make plenty of blankets while waiting for an 80% charge.

Tob: How I wish I had your database of tools, materials, etc. And, I'll guess that the CF on the Python is just as susceptible to cracking under even modest pressure so, can you point me to some of these plastic-specific, square hole rivnuts, amigo? I would certainly appreciate it, my eyes are blurry from searching.

KB, my eyesight is always blurry too!

Thinking this through, and forgive my ailing memory, did you ever consider the square inserts that were used for license plate screws?

Ahh, ok.

KB, I suppose it starts with what size is the square opening?

Yep Tob, Jaime is correct. Terrance sent the square license plate nuts and while I don't have the square hole dimensions, the nylon license plate nuts fit perfectly. Truth is, I should probably just leave well enough alone, it's just that I got that cool Rivnut tool and kit and I really wanted to use it. <grinning>

I'm working on something here... if it pans out the way I hope it will and the prototypes seem to be playing out - I might have a "product" 💸🤑💰 to make adding and removing the rain tray a snap!

Don't hold your breath tho - winter is coming here to the North East - so it might not be done and tested until next spring...
