I'm getting ready to run Rocky Mountain Race Week, and wanted to see if there are any experienced Whipple Tune users that have ran these cars up on the mountain.

We'll be racing in Pueblo/Denver, then back here in Kansas. My only real concern, is i'm not sure how the car will respond to going up to altitude and making passes. Aside from losing a little boost that is due to the thinner air (I do plan on dropping 1 or 2 pulley sizes if necessary to say in my class E/T range).

The Whipple tune has been beyond awesome for 2 years now. Driveability is great, and no issues with the tune whatsoever. I'm sure the tune is calibrated for both sea level, as well as at altitude, as the kits could be sold to either market......and I have not reached out to Whipple just yet to clarify. Just trying to cover any surprises that may crop up with tuning issues ahead of time, rather than fight them at the time.

The calibration will not offset reduced air density as well as I would like. The MAF will read less air flow and fuel flow will automatically be adjusted to match. However, at least in the ones I’ve looked at, the spark will not automatically advance though it could. If it were me, I would log the MAF and/or Load data at normal altitude, then again at race altitude. You can then, with a simple calculation, swap the pulley to fully offset the reduction in Load.

I used to race in Pueblo...I'm now down near Wichita. Dustin told me for Pueblo & Denver's altitude (not density altitude) .25-.375 smaller pulley on the mountain compared to what I'd run here in KS.

Good luck!
Thank you sir! It ought to be a good time either way.

The car usually runs 11.2-11.3@123-127 here previously (all stock, 750HP Whipple it, 305's out back). I have since removed the cats, so i'm thinking it's around 11.1-11.3ish give/take now on 91. I'm planning on running in the 12.0 Class, so it has some headroom racing up on the mountain on this 3.750" pulley.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of E/T reduction did you see coming from Pueblo to here with no changes? I'm curious as to how much the PD blower cars are affected with no changes.

Thank You!

Happy to report that the car performed flawlessly racing at 10k+ ft/Bandimere/Pueblo, then back down into the plains in Kearney NE/Great Bend KS with no problems whatsoever. I did have to drop 2 pulley sizes to get the boost back up to 9-10 in Denver/Pueblo, but that was all I had to do.

This car doesn't owe me a thing at this point. That was 1300 miles on Rocky Mountain Race Week, plus the 13k miles I already had on it since the blower kit install. Whipple tune, and runs great.

That is awesome. I bet it was a blast! I’m jealous of that 6r80....broke my MT82 the first time at the track last weekend with my whipple car. 6 passes!

Awesome to hear! What did you run for times?
I was running the 12.0 class. My 1st day did not go so well, we only had 2 passes due to the car count/time frame. I ran too quick the 1st pass with 11.92, and then dialed the power waaaaay to far back the 2nd and final pass, and ran 13.3! haha. The boost/gear feature of the Whipple tune is great. Ran 12.1, 12.1, 12.3, 12.1 the next 4 tracks. First two are at 8k+ FT altitude change, and I did one and done passes at those. All I did was change to a 3.5" pulley, and used boost/gear feature to cut power 5% in 1st only, which puts the car around 12.0.

It usually runs 11.2-11.5 all out on 91 pump gas/tires I have on it now. If I had a real tire/bubble out back, I could probably brake stall it into the 10's, but with this tire it will not leave of of anything but idle, rolling into it when it's full power.

Love the setup. I have beat this car up for 2+ years now, hundreds of dragstrip passes and it just keeps making me smile. Stock whipple tune the entire time.
