Getting ready to do a stage 2 Whipple install in my otherwise stock 2022 GT A10. I decided to do an oil change and move up to the 5W-50 that Whipple recommends. I wanted to watch oil pressure and get an idea of what the new "normal" would be with the heavier oil without having the variable of the SC already installed. Basically an 18-20 PSI increase in oil pressure with it hitting 100 psi with a heavy throttle (OEM digital dash). Then I realized a change in my "tick".

I have previously written off the intermittent tick that I have as "normal". It wasn't loud, it was intermittent and half the time when I wanted to show a fellow car guy the noise, it wouldn't happen for me.

Until this 5w-50 (syn Motocraft) was put in. Wow, now its audible from a distance away, intrusive (outside the car), and somewhat embarrassing... It has never been this loud in 16k miles. I'm literally going to pony up for another $100.00 and put 5w-30 back in the car and see if it goes away.

Question: If it goes back to what I'm used to (tick), I'm almost certain I will leave 5w-30 in the engine even after the SC install. Thoughts?

I really would have expected the opposite. Maybe try a bottle of Ceratec before you waste the new oil? I've heard enough cases of it solving the tick to believe that it works in many situations.

I would second that you use 1 or 2 bottles of ceratec to see if that changes anything

Sounds like it’s a mechanical problem

I also expected the exact opposite. I picked up 5w-30 again yesterday. Will see if it goes back to what Ford calls "normal".

First and foremost I have to correct my observation. I had an increase of 8-10 PSI with the 5w-50 not 18-20 psi.

I replaced the 5w-50 motorcraft with 5w-30 Mobile 1 2 days ago. Once again it is not as pronounced as with the 5w-50 in my specific case. Its still there though. Just more intermittent and less often.

What I can say without question is that cold starts have "zero" tick until the oil comes up to temp. I've listened multiple times now and it is clearly not present during cold starts (temps around 40 degrees ambient).

This wasn't intended to be another tick thread. More on the reasoning behind Whipple's recommended oil weight when everything I have read and watched, and discussions with racing buddies have consensus that oil weight is related to bearing gap tolerances which "do not change" with the SC install. I'm staying at 5W-30 unless something profound comes up that supports the 5w-50.

I used the Motorcraft 5w50, when I first installed the Whipple and I just did a second oil change with the Motorcraft, because I overbought the first time and was able to get the balance from Oriley Auto, for ten and change a quart. The next oil change, I'm going to use The Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40. The price on Amazon is 9 per quart.

I use 5W30 also. Mine doesn't make any ticking noises, but it only has maybe 7k miles on it.

One thing I have learned from riding Harley's is oil brand matters as far as engine noise goes.

I use the Rotella 5w40 T6 stuff and one bottle of ceratec. Never had a tick until after first oil change. Now one bottle of ceratec with each oil change and its been gone since.
