When(why) did Ford start selling hood louver options?

I remember on my Bullitt that the factory louvers were perforated for air flow. These, however look much more functional. Might be a great addition.

If I were to put them on, I would likely paint them body color, though.

I've been considering these but they are somewhat pricey. Also considering opening up the holes on the two non-functional panels (from the rear with a sander like some do with the grille openings).
