Seuss-a-phone!

It is a "Sound Resonator" it pumps sound from the engine compartment into the cabin, because you don't need to hear anything that is happening outside of the car.

Remove it carefully and store it. In thirty years when people are trying to restore these things you have a very expensive part that everyone threw away.

The whole thing is called the "sound symposer" and in some threads it is called many things that are unprintable. It can be removed (and the hole in the firewall plugged) or we can install a 1" irrigation valve to turn it on/off.

As Linkster1666 noted, keep it. Most air injection systems of the late '60s were removed and thrown away, now they are a fortune when needed to restore a concours car.

Thanks. How do I remove from firewall and seal the hole.
The whole idea seems ludricious to me, but what the heck. I have 60%+ hearing loss anyway.
Thanks Dave

Steeda, LMR and others sell a kit with a plug and hose clamp to seal off your intake and a plug for the firewall hole. The kits are kinda pricey at ~$20 for the 2$ of parts, but they have everything you need and the right sizes.

"Sound tube delete" is what you want to search for.

There's a 10mm bolt on a looonnnggg thread holding it to the firewall that you can access by reaching down into a narrow space with a ratcheting box wrench, or that you can access by removing the driver's side front wheel and liner then going through a small access door.

Or, you can disconnect the tube from the intake and twist the whole thing. The plastic tab being held by the bolt will break off and you can remove the tube. You then need to plug the intake and firewall holes. There are kits to do it, or there are readily available rubber plugs described in some of the threads on this topic.

Someone mentioned in an unrelated thread that when they were installing throttle pedal extension that they had discovered it was easier accesing the hole to plug from the inside. Wont help the removal, but may be worth looking into for plugging purposes.

I quite like the idea of adding a valve to turn it on or off. Just a butterfly valve? I guess find one in black plastic, and get it piped in somewhere inconspicuous?

I probably won't be here in 30 years...

I didn't bother to paint it black, it's the round green thing to the right of the engine cover.

Ah, nice. Looks clean. Also, I dig how you cut down the cover! Normally I see folks trim it down to where the blue is on yours.

I suppose I've got a trip to the hardware store to make.

You could just block it off at the firewall and see how you like it. Unbolt the xbox controller gas pedal from the firewall (super easy) and all will be revealed. I plugged mine with a cork from a Bourbon* bottle. Perfect fit.

* Bourbon should always be capitalized**

** I footnote alot

The Non-Performance oriented Ford Engineers first came up with the sound tube idea (as demo'd in the below pics). But being Non-Performance oriented folks, didn't know Mustangs sound better from the exhaust side, rather than the firewall side:

1653414975245.jpeg

They passed along their idea and continued testing it in house. While many agreed, "sounds great", they still weren't Ford Performance oriented and didn't know Mustangs sound better from the exhaust:

1653415262512.jpeg

1653415460693.jpeg

And after much testing, the Ford Bean Counters (also seen in this image below) had the final decision. They agreed a cheap ribbed plastic tube in the engine bay that serves no useful purpose was best for cost savings, rather than a hand held unit to the head:

1653418577884.jpeg

At one point, Ford thought they could offer these enhanced sound collecting accessories through the Ford Performance catalog to experience the Mustang's awesome sound:

1653414427747.jpeg

1653417209258.jpeg

But LUCKILY for S550 Enthsusiasts, someone in Ford Engineering who was Performance oriented had an epiphany and created the Active Exhaust! This was pure musical bliss to Mustang Enthusiasts everywhere! Yay, there was no need for silly Ford Performance sound collecting accessories - and be gone engine bay sound tube!

Unfortunately, Tabatha in Design & Development was still behind the times; her AAESCA (adjustable active enhanced sound collecting apparatus) just didn't pan out:
