There is foam missing from the lid area of the intake on my car. I never thought about it much but today I noticed the car was pretty unhappy rolling off the clutch in stop and go traffic. Intake temp was 110. Outside air temp 85 and sunny. Traffic was brutal. Once I got back up to speed, it slowly crept back to the 90s.

Should I try to get some foam to replace that missing section or is that normal air temps for the environment.

Mine hits 150+ in Summer, sitting in traffic with the a/c on. These car's engines generate a lot of heat.

Good grief. Wonder if the expanded hood vent is worth cutting a hole in the hood. Kind of hard to undo that once it’s done, but shedding some heat would be nice. It’s not even summer yet, it’s gonna get damn hot.

it'd be really nice if someone made a nice molded GT500 style vent set that looked kinda OEM.
it'd take some of the sting out of cutting up that hood.

This isn’t an issue with a “driver” (ie: a vehicle not seeing track use); those type of IAT readings are normal.

Reduction of IAT comes with acceleration where the rush of incoming air flow through the air intake tract is at a constant. The I-take A-ir T-emp is just that, the temp of the air coming up the air intake tract into the upper intake (not just the measure of air AT the upper intake).

The other problem is this:
ANY open airbox under a hood is more or less a “HAI” (hot air intake) and not a “CAI” (cold air intake). That foam between the hood and the top of the air box is not a totally “sealed unit” at all (as much as everyone wants to believe it). I know Ford designed it as such - but let’s be real, a MAJORITY of these vehicles NEVER see true track time and are not driven to their potential as the vehicle was designed (and rigorously tested by Ford and its Engineering Teams). That type of open air box on a daily driver is sucking all of the underhood heat in - even right past that “foam seal”…. On a vehicle that doesn’t see “constant” in rush of incoming cooler air up the air intake tract at a constant MAINTAINED speed for X-interval of time will NEVER have 100% positive lower IAT results “as tested” by the design team.

The IAT’s on ANY “daily driven” or even a sporadically driven vehicle on nice days where there is traffic, exterior temps are high (humidity plays a roll too), where the car is “stop-n-go”, and or speeds are under 50mph will never produce really low IAT’s… even with a completely closed box air element - that’s fact.

A “driver” can try to wrap the box, wrap the air intake tract, put holes in the hood, fenders, etc - however a vehicle that is stopped or is not being driven for a long length of time before coming to another stop - still will not be able to maintain consistent and constant low IAT’s due to heat soak.

When discussing IAT’s, the separation has to be:
- Driver (vehicle that isn’t on a track, is “in-town” driving or congested highway driving, susceptible to heavy traffic patterns, traffic control devices causing stop/start events, and heat soak; no maintained speed or consistency in incoming air)

- Track Use (consistent maintained speed where incoming air is also consistent for greater periods of time, no traffic control devices, minimal to no heat soak due to constant movement; IAT’s will be more consistent)

I’m considering getting the Anderson Fiberglass hood and then having it modified with the TrackSpec vents and. Either the single middle or the triple set and have it painted. Toss the factory hood in the growing pile of stock parts saved for later.

It’s either that or go for broke and just get the vented carbon hood. I live in an extremely hot and humid state and I have OCD. The absurd heat trapped in the engine bay drives me crazy. I had a Z06 that supposedly had heating issues and it wasn’t this bad.

I only track the car twice a year, it’s more to satisfy my neurosis than anything else. Lots of plastic and rubber in there. Shit ages faster when it’s hot. I would prefer to vent that heat out like a proper sports car should.

I'm preparing to ventilate my hood and I replaced my foam-sealed Mach 1 air box with the closed lid GT500 air box. I don't have supporting data but the difference between ambient vs AIT is less with the closed box. Don't know how much heat extraction and aero benefits the ventilated hood will provide but I suppose it can't hurt, especially at the track.

Got a friend who is giving me his GT500 air box when he switches to a JLT.

The Trackspec vents do look great, better then Race Louvers, however they do not work nearly as well. The race louver sets essentially have Gurney flaps - and without them the louvers are basically just good for venting heat while stopped and do almost nothing while moving. Someone else had mentioned AJ Hartman and they are correct to reference him. Look up his videos on it, or check out his website. I have trackspec and wish someone had shared this with me before cutting..

Nice. Not a bad idea. Im gonna do JLT/tune at some point, but I want to also have headers so I can just get it all done at once. This is a good solution until then for a reasonable price because it’s gonna be awhile until I can get the headers.
My buds 2019 makes 830whp on a Mustang Dyno with a centri/10R80 through 100% factory exhaust.
Whenever I read about someone wanting to do a tune, cai and headers I cringe as it's such a pain for basically no gain(except in dB's) - unless your fi then it's a minimum gain. I did it before my whipple and I would swear it made me slower(no dyno proof but I would of bet lot's of $$'s)

That car is now making 930whp still on 100% factory exhaust.

I plan on going whipple over the fall.
