As many of you know the preproduction Mach 1’s had black emblems. I was really disappointed to see the production emblems changed to a polished raised letter over the black base. I’ve spent the last couple months trying to find a company willing to make emblem overlays for the factory Mach emblem and I’m extremely pleased to say I think I’ve found someone. I lost count of how many companies I reached out to! Most did not respond. The few that did, unfortunately did not have the capability or desire to work with me.
The idea I have in mind is a 3D vinyl overlay with an adhesive backing. I have seen emblem overlays that are a sticker but I wanted something better than that. On my previous 4runner I had the type of overlays I’m talking about that were sold by Toyota and they are in my opinion, much superior to a simple sticker.

I have a phone call later this week with the owner of the company to discuss this project. What I’d like to know before that call is who else would be interested in this? I will have more details after speaking with him but it sounds like his capabilities include modeling the actual emblems on my car and creating a file in which they can produce a set of emblems, presumably in a variety of colors. I’m looking to match the preproduction car but if you guys have any input or questions I’d be happy to get more info.

I was fortunate to talk to someone that was involved with the Mach 1 program and he believes the emblems were satin black. From the pictures I’ve seen, I can’t quite determine if they were all one color black, or if the base was black with magnetic raised letters. Either way, I will be seeing this project through! I’d like to be able to help out anyone else that wants these emblem covers as well so if you are interested feel free to post in here, including any questions or requests that you would have. I’m posting some pictures of the preproduction car with black emblems as well as the Toyota emblems covers so you hopefully get a better idea of what I’m referring to.

thanks everyone!

The emblems look like they are molded black and then finished with a silver paint on the tips so the first mod I was planning to try was to take some acetone and a Q-tip and see how easy the paint comes off the emblem on rear deck lid. Probably start with the bottom of the "1" so if I don't like how it's working, it won't be too noticeable if I stop there. Gotta be careful not to drip any on the paint though. Near-zero cost way to get black emblems.

Still nobody brave enough to get some nail polish remover and a Q-tip to see if the silver paint comes off? I'll be the guinea pig and do it but you'll have to wait quite a while yet for the results.

The contrast is a lot better on these even on bright paint, and it matches the decklid, strutbrace, door sills etc.

I don't think you can make it like the first version just with removing the silver paint.

You can always order an emblem to practice on. I think it’s about $80 and saves you from messing up the ones on your car when it gets here

Thanks for that photo. I’m starting to really think that it’s a black base with magnetic raised letters especially after seeing your post.

I used to work in a plastic molding factory, and these emblem looks like molded black parts that have a slightly raised outline of the letters that was painted, very common method of adding a 2nd color to a molded part. If that's the case it should be easy to remove the paint from the raised outline, leaving just the black plastic. Won't know for sure till I get the car but that's just what it's always looked like from the pictures, particularly since the original emblems on the prototype Mach 1's were plain black.

The outline was more like magnetic, not black. They still had two colours. On darker colours it didn't work very well, I noticed that on blue even then. I can see that on FJG or white it can work fine with less contrast.

Here's a used pre-production Mach 1 at Montrose Ford in Ohio, chassis PP012, production date Sept 2020, with the original black emblems. These are the best pics they had listed but I am for sure going for black emblems on a silver car:

Sweet find! I met with the owner of an industrial design company last week. Went well! He’s going to work on some concepts and send them to me for review. I have some Mach 1 emblems on order for him to scan. One of his ideas is to 3D print an exact replica emblem in a solid color, including the raised letters. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long to get those in because his turn around time should be pretty fast.
