Turbocharger blew up. Can anyone guess what happened based on the sound?

No I don’t see any loose air lines. No fluids leaking either.

I've had 3 or 4 turbo cars in the past and have heard that sound before. Definitely a shaft bearing or bushing. If it actually "blew up" you would know it. That happens when an impeller breaks. Yours sounds like it just stopped spinning.

Did Ford cover it under warranty?

Yes. They didn’t even ask me for proof of oil changes or such. I always changed the oil every 5000 miles on the dot with synthetic.

They replaced the entire turbo and cat (oil leaked into it cuz of this)

Very pleased with Ford. Especially that they took the care to replace the cat which had nothing wrong with it at the time (no symptoms) but just cuz they knew some oil had been in it.

Turbo definitely failed from me abusing it till it was red hot all the time. Car was at 42,000 miles

It should last longer and should not get that hot. Getting red hot is an indication of something restricting flow.

looks like something (oil) is coming out of the exhaust on accel. turbo lifespan is probably shortened from not allowing it to cool before shutting off especially after running it hard.
